It makes me sad. And it is a huge management problem. America has never been comfortable recognizing the reality that a significant minority of the country's citizens are ignorant racists. From the era of de-segregation and civil rights but before the explosion of social media, their voices were subdued and controlled by social norms that rejected their values as inconsistent with a modern democracy governed by the rule of law. But now, they can spread their hate, lies and conspiracy theories thanks to all these social media. They can inhabit an alternative fantasy world free of facts. Worse, there is a vicious feedback loop where free from the need to face facts, they nurse and reinforce their grudges based on imaginary fantasies through these online platforms, potentially triggering acts of violence and other extremism. So very well said.

True, but America has also never fully come to grips with our true history. Slavery and White Supremacy were actually written into the constitution.
You can draw a direct line from slavery to the civil war to Jim Crow to civil rights battles to redlining and housing discrimination to Ronald Reagan's "welfare queens" slurs to Donald Trump.
The conventional wisdom that Trump was elected because of economic anxiety is b.s. Look at those mobs of thugs at the Capitol on 1/6. They flew from all over the country to D.C. They live streamed on their smart-phones. Many stayed at or at least wined and dined at Trump Hotel. These were not the downtrodden. These are the bigots and racists afraid of losing their privileged spot in the pecking order.
I know it offends some here, but Trump is a racist and everyone who voted for him or supports him is a racist as well.
That's what all of this is about.

I just don't like the fact that this is patently false -- especially if you are using the term to mean bigotry. It overlooks the Right-to-Life crowd (some absolute nuts). It overlooks the I Love My Guns crowd (some absolute nuts). It overlooks those who have used Trump to consolidate their own power. Sure, these groups can overlap, but this blanket statement does not help at all. Not if the goal is to figure out what the hell has gone wrong.

Trump didn't just appear out of the blue. He was the culmination of a long radicalization from the right that started from the 70's, appear more prominently in the 80's with Reagan and his "supply side economics", then in the 90's we had "Contract with America" from Newt Gingrich. All the while, the GOP gradually dispensed with the norms and rules of a democracy, embracing ever more radical and extreme ideas from the right. So when Trump appeared, he seized the opportunity to embrace this trend. The GOP today is an authoritarian-leaning party that does not fully accept democratic principles.

I agree with this completely. And I think that the Fox News/Rush L/media circuit played a huge role in ratcheting up the anger and served as a brainwashing machine that allowed them to inhabit an alternative reality capable of denying seemingly any facts.

My colleagues from the other side of the planet do not think that the Capitol incident is something 'that bad'. They argue that it is part of Democracy. They see BLM protest as more dangerous as those people attacked ordinary people and businesses. The trump supporters attacked the government. That's essentially how they view it.

Deep wisdom by the unemployed of Volley Talk. The losers with no jobs that have all kinds of time to post on this site hourly. Just exactly the kind of people we should treasure advice from.

Now go get a job. I’m concerned about the mental well-being of someone trying to “get” normal posters by calling them unemployed... when it is clear to everyone that’s not the case. It is very very odd behavior.

His hero Trump is unhinged, so naturally he will copy Trump's behavior.

I’m concerned about the mental well-being of someone trying to “get” normal posters by calling them unemployed... when it is clear to everyone that’s not the case. It is very very odd behavior. Or to claim that 'everyone who voted for Trump is a racist.' Which wasn't just the comment of one lone person that doesn't represent the opinions of anyone else on this board.
