I'd be surprised if USD doesn't win the conference, really no weaknesses and by far the best pins in the league.

Any more info? Are you talking about Covid restrictions in LA county? I believe these schools’ basketball teams have been playing, so I was thinking the volleyball teams would be ok to play as well w/ no fans. After reading about Stanford not playing due to Santa Clara County restrictions, I’m guessing the restriction at issue is that Santa Clara can’t come and go from their county to play at LMU.

Indoor sports are prohibited. And even if SCU traveled to Los Angeles to play, they’d have to quarantine upon returning to the county.

I think they'll probably still win, but that's a real question mark. The only thing is I'm not really sure who would challenge them. I think BYU is probably a season away from being really good again, but then again, they have a great coach.

San Diego has too much firepower not to finish first in this conference. Froling on 1 side and Fayad/Lukes on the other side is going to be impossible to defend most nights. I believe their backcourt was pretty decent last year too, so I'm predicting a deep NCAA run. Hopefully they get to host first weekend.

Hmm, I would guess that hosting is doubtful for any WCC team, given that there are only 48 teams in the field this season, and the WCC is not playing out-of-conference matches, so they won't get to prove themselves against teams from, say, the Pac-12 and Big 10 like they normally would. I guess if San Diego were to go undefeated in the WCC, maybe. But even then, I would probably bet against it, since the WCC was down across the board in 2019. I think that fair or not, that lingering perception will probably factor into how the selection committee looks at the conference this spring.

Hi everyone, I have taken a long break from following volleyball, and have been overwhelmed by other responsibilities over the past 10 months. I just watched a couple of match recaps today for the first time this season (ie. I missed the fall season).
I'm sorry to hear about San Diego. The WCC is going to have some real difficulties because of the sustained Covid surge in the state, though the curve is finally trending downward again. Because our hospital ICU capacity has been so strained, we were slapped with the most stringent restrictions here in the Bay Area and especially in SC County, by early December. I had heard that Stanford has been practicing outdoors with masks. I don't know if Santa Clara has done the same. Santa Clara County restrictions specifically prohibit team sports practices, which caused the San Francisco 49ers to immediately high tail it over to Arizona for the remainder of their season. That said, the Santa Clara basketball teams are competing without masks, so I don't know what's up with that. The mens team just played at LMU...
Santa Clara County has severe restrictions on sports, as well as the travel ban that requires 10 day quarantine for any of us who travel more than 150 miles from our county. I don't know how Santa Clara is going to play any matches. San Francisco has much fewer cases, but they and SMC still fall under many of the "Bay Area" restrictions. Pacific may be less affected. And Santa Cruz County has less restrictions.
While Santa Clara County is under the State's Regional Stay at Home Order, collegiate and professional athletic programs are allowed to operate only outdoors, and only if athletes do not come within six feet of one another at any time; for clarity, all athletic activities that involve contact or close proximity are prohibited during this time. Any collegiate or professional athletic team or program that travels outside the County to engage in athletic activity prohibited in the County is prohibited from engaging in further athletic activity within Santa Clara County during this time period. Any collegiate or professional athletic team or program that travels outside the County to engage in athletic activity allowed in the County must comply with the Mandatory Directive for Travel. This restriction is in effect until 12:01 a.m. on the day after the California Department of Public Health announces that the County is no longer subject to the Regional Stay at Home Order, unless the County Health Officer otherwise rescinds, modifies, or extends this restriction.
I'm happy to hear if anyone else has more information on the Bay Area WCC teams, and who is actually able to play on Tuesday. Thanks!
I don't think this is going to feel like a very satisfying season of volleyball...

Governor Newsom is likely to lift the stay-at-home order for those CA counties still in it (which includes Bay Atea and Southern California counties) tomorrow. This would be good news for Santa Clara U, whose county regulations would then presumably loosen. Was pleased to see the WCC being nimble and rescheduling SMC to play at LMU this week when their previously scheduled opponents both had to cancel due to covid restrictions (SCU) or covid cases (UoP). That kind of flexibility is going to be critical to keeping the season going! What could Gonzaga do this week and Portland next week to fill in for USD cancelling? Anything?

Today's tweet from Pacific: Pacific Volleyball @pacificvball · 12h With an emphasis on the continued health & safety of the student-athletes & staff in both programs, the Pacific women's volleyball team has officially postponed their opening matches vs. Saint Mary's on Tuesday, Jan. 26 and Wednesday, Jan. 27.

This would be fantastic news, and not just for sports... I know Sacramento's restrictions have been lifted already. So, California statewide Stay at Home order was lifted this morning, but counties still have the option to maintain more strict guidelines than the state requires, and that has typically been the way Santa Clara County rolls... hoping to hear otherwise!
