With a week away wanted to start a thread for spring. It looks like USD and BYU will again fight it out for the title. Can Pepp or LMU make some noise?

I'm curious if bayarea has a preview coming. They did a great job with the WCC preview and the thread in general in 2019.

Given the state of restrictions in California, including travel restrictions, what is the over/under for how many matches will actually be played?

Here in the Bay Area the strictest county is San Mateo. I’m in Contra Costa which is St Mary’s College (SMC). I know SMC has been practicing in their home gym. I’m hopeful that most matches will happen!

WCC basketball games (both women’s and men’s) have been happening. There have been quite a few cancellations due to covid cases within programs but I haven’t heard of cancellations due to any state or county regulations. That gives me some optimism that a majority of volleyball games will happen. Santa Clara has been the strictest county with regards to sports, but I believe Santa Clara U has been playing their basketball games in Santa Cruz, so perhaps that continues for volleyball.

I offered to do this before bayarea went MIA, hoping that others would pitch in to help carry the load for the WCC thread. Univsersity of San Diego San Diego loses HM AA Megan Jacobsen, WCC Setter of the Year Anna Newsome, and DS Payton Douglass. New recruits include three freshmen, a transfer, and an international arrival. USD looks as good as ever at the pins, slightly untested in the middle, highly competitive in the back row, and will be led by a Junior setter who has taken quite a few reps (actually more in her freshman year than her sophomore year).
The back-up setter, at this point, appears to be 6’5 All American Opposite Grace Frohling incoming freshman Alex Hoglund. USD also has an early arrival in 2021 recruit Isadora Tercariol out of Brazil.
At MB, they return 6’1 Lauren Turner, who collected the most block for the Toreros last year. 2nd team high school AA Sasha Ratliff will most likely challenge for the second spot. Other MBs on the roster are Senior Cami May, Freshman Elly Schraeder, and transfer Gabby Goddard who saw limited playing time at UK.
At the pins, they return Frohling and a lot of experienced 6'2” hitters, with Thana Fayad (who opted to cash in a redshirt to come back for one more season) and Katie Lukes providing the most production at OH last year. They have additional options with Seniors Roxie Wiblin and new recruit Kylie Pries.
Annie Benbow won the highly contested libero position last year and can expect to be pushed by last year’s high profile transfer Camryn Tastad.
It may be that the most notable change in personnel will be the absence of 19 year assistant Brent Hilliard, who took the HC position at San Diego State.

Great rundown. Toreros will be very tough this year, especially on the pins. Ratliff transferred to Ole Miss this fall and joined her A5 teammate Callaway Cason there. Perhaps that was the impetus for bringing Goddard on. Will be interesting to see how significantly the loss of Hilliard affects the program and how quickly he can make SDSU a force in the Mountain West

Has the conference put out a preseason coaches poll or preseason all conference team? Maybe they aren't doing this in the spring

Any more info? Are you talking about Covid restrictions in LA county? I believe these schools’ basketball teams have been playing, so I was thinking the volleyball teams would be ok to play as well w/ no fans.

If the matches get played, or at least majority, I think this will be the first year in a long while where it is crowded at the top. BYU is way more human this year (that #16 ranking is on reputation alone it seems), SD is solid but not a clear frontrunner, and as mentioned Pepp and LMU should be in a position to contend with them.
