So I saw this on the usctrojans.com site in the write-up about today’s matches against LSU. It brings up a lot of questions in my head... “Following the completion of the duals, USC recognized the contributions of its departing seniors with a small ceremony on court two. The Women of Troy celebrated the careers of Paige Dreeuws, Josannah Vazquez, Maja Kaiser, Haley Hallgren, and Joy Dennis.“ You can see a photo/video of the five in the article. Congrats to the five “departing seniors”. usctrojans.com/news/2021/4/4/womens-beach-volleyball-no-1-usc-beach-volleyball-gets-one-of-two-against-no-3-lsu.aspxSammy Slater, Hailey Harward, and Julia Scoles also should be departing members of the team. I wonder if these three have been invited back next year to take advantage of the NCAA ruling on 2020/2021 eligibility. Sammy Slater assuredly should be lumped in with Haley Hallgren and Maja Kaiser under normal circumstances. I’m afraid Kballer9 will blow a fuse if Harward and Scoles return. 😆🤗✌️ This is pure speculation, but did Haley Hallgren choose to do a grad transfer year at another school? Stanford, Cal, or UCLA? Bo Chulo(Culo) ought to also be a departing grad student. Does Bo have the talent to be a starter next year? Tina Graudina’s departure likewise should be a whole other conversation. All our intel says she planned just this one last year to wrap up her College career. She’ll likely graduate this year as a redshirt junior, but wasn’t included. Hmmm. Has she reconsidered?

So is Scoles going to be back soon? I would hope so.
Don't understand how you take players off the bench and start them out at the three spot? Seems like would have been better to promote 4/5 court players to 3 and work your bench into 4/5 teams.

Agreed. Maybe the alumnae should chip in for another two court cams so that we can watch entire games. Maybe it's a budget problem or technical bandwidth or something. Rather than bandwidth, which can’t be a problem as USC is a major hub on the internet backbone, I’d guess that there might have been a buffering problem. Or maybe two hours was reserved and the stream timed out after two hours? Likely not budget as they resumed streaming a few minutes later on Saturday when it went out. Agree that there should be 3 streams. There should be no shortage of cheap student techies on campus. i asked and this the streaming issue was apparently a Pac-12 Networks "event length" issue. Because it all streams through the Pac-12+ system, all the duals were assumed to be two hours long by the Network system so the two that went longer were shut off automatically, robotically. The streaming steam worked to get it back up, but was only able to get it working for the last few minutes on the first day. Also - there are NO students on campus.... so there are also no techies to hire. It is hilarious to me that people always equate "good team" to "unlimited resources" when that is simply not the case at most places and isn't the case even at a place that you would think has lots of resources like USC.

Slater, Harward, and Scoles all have 2022 available to them and it sounds like the plan would be to get their graduate degrees and play volleyball. Bo Chulo only just started her graduate degree, so she too still has school to do, and eligibility remaining. Can't speak to how talented she is though. And Graudina, I believe - took the entire fall 2019 and spring 2020 off from school to prepare for the Tokyo Games, which didn't happen - so she actually is academically still a junior as well. So she would in theory need to attend classes through spring 2022 to complete her undergraduate degree. No idea on Haley Hallgren. I do know she completed her undergrad degree last summer though. Looking at the website, students "can" finish the entrepreneurship masters in a single year. Same degree as Harward, Scoles, etc.

Julia Scoles was held out due to injury. “To be given that opportunity with the altered lineup was very encouraging, we had to make some changes. There’s always something, and that’s why every season is a different adventure, but the way we battled was really impressive,” USC coach Dain Blanton said. “I really like the way we fought. If you think about it, I think we lost 17-15 in the third, 15-13 in the third again, and you turn those points around, and we’re undefeated.” volleyballmag.com/usc-lsu-ucla-fsu-beach-040521/

According to past, Harwerd will only play with who she wants. Why split Halgren and Megan Kraft? Hailey was put as a blocker with Paige Dreews after Mollie Ebertine had struggles. Hailey Halgren is a great and versatile player that seems undervalued, she and Paige did well. Why not move up the 4 and 5 like you said. LSU coach was ready and firing against each USC team. Also, they have UCLA coming up and they won all weekend. Hopefully Julia Scoles will be OK to come back soon for the team, she is a great player.

LSU kept the ball away from Tina and put much pressure to Sammy. Yes, could have gone either way.

Seems like would have been better to promote 4/5 court players to 3 and work your bench into 4/5 teams. Yes, so true, why have the line up he did. A LB person informed me that Hailey Harwerd will insist on playing with who she wants or she will fall apart. Did you watch last year with Hailey Halgren. Why split Halgren and Megan Kraft? Hailey was put as a blocker with Paige Dreews after Mollie Ebertine had struggles. Hailey Halgren is a great and versatile player that seems undervalued, she and Paige did well. Hopefully Julia Scoles will be OK to come back soon for the team, she is a great player. Don’t forget that the anti-sandbagging rules prevent players from moving more than one place. So if you move 4s and 5s up to 3s and 4s AND keep Hallgren and Kraft together then that means Hallgren/Kraft also move up, in their case to 2s. Then Harward has nowhere to go. Maybe the only other move would have been to switch a third pair. This probably didn’t happen because Dennis/Maple and the Nourses had been playing great so why mess with them. Alternative lineup: 1. Graudina/Slater 2. Harward/Kraft 3. Hallgren/Maple 4. Nourse/Nourse 5. Dennis/Harper Hallgren (they played 4s together last year, though I have no idea if Harper is still playing at the same level) In my opinion, the strategy employed by the coaches should have worked but the 1s ultimately didn’t pull out the victories as I feel they had a sub-par weekend. It happens to all teams and better now than the first round at Gulf Shores. ✌️

“The women I coach are individually incredible and collectively outstanding. We work hard to reach our highest potential as a team and individually help them become a better player than they thought possible. And then mirror that academically. If those boxes are checked, I’ve done my job as a coach. If we get a National Title as well, that’s the ultimate. Our team is remarkably solid,” USC coach Dain Blanton said. avp.com/news/from-my-perspective-dain-blanton

“We’ve got some really good footage and we saw some great things and some things we need to work on. That was exactly the point. That’s why we scheduled this in early April, so we could get a look at the competition and also give ourselves a really good test,” USC coach Dain Blanton said. “I do think that there are some really dangerous teams out there. Anyone can strike at one time, but I think the teams this weekend are really strong and playing at a high level, at the top tier.” volleyballmag.com/college-beach-volleyball-040721/

s3.amazonaws.com/sidearm.sites/usctrojans.com/documents/2021/4/7/21uscbvb0407.pdfWell, at least Julia Scoles is anticipated back for the Pac-12 North Tourney. If so, have to squeeze Cal and Stanford and leave no doubt about what a healthy Trojan squad can accomplish. Anticipated USC lineup Pairing No. 1 :: Tina GRAUDINA/Sammy SLATER No. 2 :: Hailey HARWARD/Julia SCOLES No. 3 :: Haley HALLGREN/Megan KRAFT No. 4 :: Joy DENNIS/Delaynie MAPLE No. 5 :: Audrey NOURSE/Nicole NOURSE

While I’m still sad scoles left, I’m so happy she’s succeeding elsewhere. Such a talented player
