Associate head coach David Hyte is making an appearance on BYUSN this morning sometime in the next hour. Fingers crossed for better questions this time. Here is the interview with Hyte. Unfortunately, the interviewers once again did a sub-optimal job. They asked about the OH2 and MB2 positional battles, which was good, though Hyte was very cagey with his answers by basically just identifying everyone on the team who plays those positions. I don't blame him for that, but at least they asked the question. They also asked about the schedule, which was a decent question. But they didn't ask about what the team is doing to address its biggest weakness (passing) or even ask about the back line or who will be playing six rotations at all. And even more annoyingly, they asked Hyte for his opinions on the best seats in the Smith Fieldhouse, as well as his go-to snack when watching the men's games. These questions are a huge waste of time, and this is really annoying me. Edit: Also, they asked about how "different" it would be to play the first two weekends at home, even though they did that in 2021 and 2019, so it won't be different at all from recent years. And they made a comment about how Duke was making a "returning trip" from last season (?? BYU didn't play Duke last year at all--they played at Duke in 2018) Both of the volleyball interviews this week just screamed lack of preparation to me. Step your game up, fellas.

I second the development of Anderson/Livingston at OH. She has worked hard and the coaches have really helped her see the court better each year. She is getting better and better as time goes on. As far as Snuka goes, I don't see her impacting the recruiting as much as helping train the setters on the roster and incoming recruits through 2024. She is needed to take the load off of Heather a bit. I think the BYU women missed a hire that was a sure fire great setting coach. Heather didn't bite and he went to the U of U as a volunteer and is now a paid assistant coach. They won't let him go and I bet he becomes a head D-1 coach. I ran into him at nationals and he is very knowledgeable in talent evaluation and I was surprised at his level of critique in the setting position. He told me some things in confidence that I won't repeat, but lets just say that my opinion is that he might have been viewed as a threat from a setting and an offense standpoint by the current BYU women's staff with the exception of DH. Anyway, Utah rarely out smarts BYU on the vb court or on the bench but I think they did on this hire. UVU has to decide if they really want to win and build towards elite level status. My observation is that they don't. It takes too much work and Sam is simply satisfied to be a decent program and not get in trouble fighting with BYU for the best players. He is a really nice guy but probably too nice. He also loves running a 6-2 which is a cop-out for not evaluating 5-1 capable setters. He is a Pitt copy but with only half of their athletic ability on his roster and 1/4th of the drive to excel. I do think it was interesting that he hired a club V coach as his assistant but not one of the V owners. UVU should be perfectly positioned to be very competitive in the WAC and with BYU from an athletic and money standpoint but they need a change at the top if they want to climb into a top 40 program. They could do it if their AD emphasized accountability. They have issues seeing upside in their recruiting and that is something that can't be taught or learned. You have the ability to see upside or you don't. Some coaches look at a club team and can immediately see players who are being played out of position and can reconfigure the roster in their mind and others will simply rely on the club coaches telling them that so and so can play or so and so can't. UVU and Utah take more direction from Club coaches than BYU does in general.

Do you have much experience "hiring" (as a volunteer) all Pac12 setters? In my experience, volunteer coaches [including elite level former players] rarely have primary responsibility for training any position. She will likely assist the staff and head coach with many things including training. If you hear differently from the staff let us know. Is University of Arizona even in the Pac-12? I am joking...AZVB, please don't get mad at me. But honestly, not sure I would call Arizona an "elite volleyball" program. In all seriousness, I hope she is a huge asset and uses this experience to land a great paid position in the near future. Who called Arizona an elite volleyball program?

Has anyone heard about the time and date for the blue white scrimmage? My guess based on last season is that it's next Saturday, August 20.

Do they broadcast or stream the Blue/White scrimmage? I don't think so. It's not listed on the BYUtv schedule. I plan to attend in person.

According to this, BYU's regular season finale against San Diego will be broadcast on ESPNU. I was a little surprised at first because that's a home match, which would normally be on BYUtv. I'm not sure I can think of a time when a BYU women's volleyball regular season match was on national TV. Edit: Apparently, this is wrong. I'm not sure why I don't remember the previous ESPNU matches.

If you mean home matches, I don't know about that, but I know the WCC had/has an agreement for one match a year to be televised by ESPN (chosen by ESPN) in years past and it often involved BYU on the road against Pepperdine or LMU. I wasn't sure if that was still in place though, as it didn't happen last year. It may be optional though, so maybe that's why it didn't happen last year. Not sure where I read the details of this though, so don't quote me on anything.

Do they broadcast or stream the Blue/White scrimmage? I've never seen them broadcast the women's scrimmage, but they did do the men's scrimmage in Dec 2019 (I believe that's when it was anyway). I think it was actually Dec 2020, which makes sense because it was during COVID, so they didn't have spectators, just televised it. Speaking of the men, they didn't have a public scrimmage last year, so I hope that isn't the case with the women this year.

Actually, now that I look at it, their home match against Pepperdine was on ESPNU in 2019, so I stand corrected.

I know that ESPN broadcast the last regular season game the year before COVID against Pepperdine. I remember because Karch did the broadcast and I got to talk with him.

They also broadcast the women's soccer scrimmage in the last week or so.

Blue/White scrimmage is Saturday August 20 at 1 p.m. Open to the public. I am betting heavily on Blue to win.
