Bump. I will pretend to WFH while having this on. Since I've worked most nights this week. I'm just going to watch without guilt.

Why can’t programs outside of the usual Big ten ever turn it around? Is there so much better players that the top half of the conference gets? I sometimes don’t understand why it’s always the same teams in too and bottom half of this conference.

Even in the B1G, only two teams have won the NC I believe, only 10 in the history of the competition. Women's volleyball is dominated by an aristocracy it's hard to break into.
Partly it's because there are a few true absolute superstars that make the difference in the end. And they only go to a few programs. Plummer comes to mind.
I'm not sure that explains all of it though. Could she win without Hentz or Gray? So there is a depth issue as well that is similar. Nebraska and PSU are more about depth in my opinion.
But the badgers, gophers, illini have had depth, and been close but no cigar. Is it belief as well? Is the support provided by the institution and their communities what tells these young ladies that they might belong?

The badgers were on the outside looking in from 2007-2012. They had history and a fan base to build on, but that history did not presage being number 1 really. Look at Baylor!
Programs can make it, but they have to have good people and resources for a long time. It takes a long time. Especially when your competition is as tough as the big ten.

The Badger winter was 2008-12. They were good in 2007, and the regional was in Madison, but Iowa State came in and upset them during an ice storm in the second round. Needless to say, not a good night for Badger fans. I witnessed a car accident in front of the Field House on my way in. Sadly, it was an omen. That said, the elite title group is very hard to break into, and Long Beach State and Pacific have fallen out of the elite level for a long time.

So excited! Living through a deep freeze (I know...it's nothing compared to the midwest) and ice storm destroying my landscaping in Austin...I need volleyball today!

So excited! Living through a deep freeze (I know...it's nothing compared to the midwest) and ice storm destroying my landscaping in Austin...I need volleyball today! We've had the coldest stretch of arctic temperatures I can remember in a while. Not the coldest temperatures, but the coldest number of days that start below zero and end around 5 F. Sunday night, minus 15. It's been at least a week with about four more days to go (and the worst of it coming). It's fun to see the commercial buildings with the steam vents frozen into arctic stalagmites. Much like Kraft's eyelashes. So, 30 F would feel like shorts weather.

I remember and do not miss the 40 years I spent living in the frozen tundra. Part of the joy of being down here is the variety of plants I could have...crossing fingers and plugging in space heaters!

Funny, when I say "from" I don't usually mean inclusive of that year. Hmmm. That may explain some misunderstandings I've had.
