It has died down a bit but I'm curious what people think of the recent firestorm around the disparity in treatment of men's and women's participants in the NCAA basketball championships.
Here was the NCAA's response:

They gave the men 500-piece puzzles, and the women only 150-piece puzzles. That's a footnote in the greater disparities but just a true moment of incredible pettiness.

At least they gave them hoops this year. That peach basket thing in 2019 was ridiculous.

Seriously, my gripe is with the obscenity of the men's tournament expenditures, not with what the women get. Our priorities are so out-of-whack in this country.

Women's basketball only gets treated the way it does because the comparison between men's and women's is just *so* obvious. Otherwise it would get treated more like the "Olympic Sports".
I'm not saying this because I think the women should be happy with whatever they get. I'm saying this because I think the "Olympic sports" ought to be treated more like men's basketball or football.

There is no reason the NCAA can't give all DI sports a similar championship experience to MBB.

If these resources are so finite, why are men's football coaches paid tens of millions of dollars a year? Why the hell can't the NCAA just seed the volleyball tournament 1-64? It's certainly not "impossible". They have the money. They just don't want to spend it on women's volleyball when they could spend more of it on football instead.

"The NCAA" spends very little money on football. They do run the FCS, D2, and D3 championships (and those teams have huge rosters so I guess it probably is decent money), but the NCAA doesn't pay Nick Saban's salary... They do spend a lot of money on the men's basketball championship. It's expensive to operate a basketball game in a 100,000-seat football stadium. Granted, they make a TON of revenue, but the expenditures are high. Seeding the women's basketball tournament makes it the biggest money loser of any NCAA championship, but they do it because the optics would look bad otherwise.

The solution is simple: don't spend so much f***ing money on men's sports. Spread it around. INCLUDING to the other men's sports that need it.
Just because our country's priorities are out-of-whack doesn't mean that the NCAA's has to be.
And note this solution is NOT to spend obscene amounts on all sports. It's to spread it around.

Okay, well, your "solution" is never going to happen, so I'm not sure what your point is. I'm not sure how it's hard to understand why the NCAA would spend a lot of money on a tournament that accounts for over 70% of its revenue. It's providing a much larger ROI than anything else.
