Once again, here is the issue: As Far As YOU Know. It has been precedent for YEARS that the NCAA makes exception for religious considerations. It doesn’t often come up in DI, as there aren’t many schools who have campus-dictated religious observation and many conferences where it could are set up as to not have Sunday matches with the schools it effects not making deep enough runs for it to impact scheduling. However, as previously mentioned, it comes up often in other divisions. People being ignorant of NCAA policy isn’t BYUs fault, the other DI coaches certainly know the policy and don’t take issue with it. Complaining about it makes you look petty and ridiculous (and a bit bigoted). And I say that as a staunchly non-religious person. It used to be that the NCAA only gave an exemption for Sundays. Then they took that exemption away, in the famous "NCAA rescinds the BYU rule" episode of 1998. Then they brought it back, but they expanded it to include days other than Sundays and religions other than Christian. But yeah, in D1, as far as I know it's still only BYU that makes use of the rule. Do you know otherwise? I still say the rule bothers me, because it allows religious schools to dictate something that other schools don't get to dictate. That sits poorly with me. Yeah, I mean, making an exception for a school due to religious beliefs is a lot. We should definitely change scheduling for more valid reasons, like working around football games. Really need to make sure we make accommodations for the important stuff.

Our brightest minds and highest paid public employees in every state must have their say first before all. So let it be written. So let it be done.

I didn't have a chance to watch the match live, but I watched it on demand, and I was impressed with BYU. They basically are who they've been all season, which is a balanced offensive team with a great setter and a strong block (the latter was actually not that present at the beginning of the season). It was also really impressive how they stared down all those set points that UCLA had without flinching and just kept battling. UCLA has some really strong pin hitters, and Fleck is great at her job, but they definitely had issues in the setting department. Before the match, I looked at them as a better version of San Diego, which also was a talented team that had setting issues. I certainly wouldn't have been surprised if UCLA had won, but I'm not surprised that BYU won either. I actually really like UCLA and probably would have rooted for them against almost any other team. It's too bad they had to play BYU so early.

Getting a defensive transfer or developing one is key for BYU ...Livingston while showing freshman moments, played very well in this game. ...Madi Allen also had a bit of a down game at least from my naked eye in serve receive. ..taylen didn’t have her best game, but when it counted she came through. Eschenberg, showing her a experience, played great A little bit sloppy sometimes. Miscommunications and such. Kate didn’t have a great game and I have to wonder if that is partly due to poor passing not allowing her to get involved much. Sad.

I think it's important to remember that UCLA is a good team, so BYU not having its best match of the season against arguably the best opponent it's played all year is not surprising, especially given that this was the first NCAA Tournament experience for the freshmen, and Eschenberg is really the only player on the team that has a lot of experience playing in the tournament, since Ballard-Nixon hasn't been a full-time starter until this season. The passing is certainly not the greatest, but having Bower means that it doesn't have to be great. Just not terrible is good enough against most teams. It won't get the job done against Wisconsin, but they would be tough be beat anyway. Even if BYU gets blown out on Saturday, this season has been an unmitigated success in my view, as I wasn't even sure they'd make the tournament. And they have good recruits coming in.

I wasn't even sold on BYU after watching its first few games of the season. I really appreciate teams who get better throughout the season. That takes both good coaching and dedicated players. BYU's blocking (throughout the years, really) always makes me think they have a chance in any match. That block did not disappoint against UCLA. I think it will give them a chance against Wisconsin.

That's true. I wasn't fully sold on them until they won both matches against San Diego. Early on, I thought they actually looked better than I was expecting (with the exception of the loss to Pepperdine), and I knew it was such a young team with such a good coach that I was cautiously optimistic.

So does this mean we can fire Sealy already?

So does this mean we can fire Sealy already? Nope. You're stuck with him as long as he can keep fixing his recruiting failures via the portal.

Mature, intelligent people respect other peoples reasoned choices. This is so funny, when we are talking about religion! As if! But anyway, I've said all I intend to say already.

Can Barry set? What about Savage? Is there ANYONE on that bench that can just bump set the ball to one of these UCLA players who's last name isn't Lane?! Yeah, they'd be better off with Fleck bump setting the entire match.

Oh please lord let UCLA find a competent setter Oh please lord let UCLA find a coach that doesn't ruin every setter's confidence.
