The Chinese sport school system provide a direct pipeline for promising volleyball players to go the pro teams, and even the NT, if they show enough talent. Zhu and most NT players came up through these sport academies. There is no NCAA to go through. There is college sports in China yes, including volleyball, although that is a separate system and few college players would make the cut to the NT. In the past, such sport schools were responsible for many Olympic gold medal glories, including volleyball. However, such schools are becoming more controversial. They organized along a military training style, with boot camp drills and harsh and unyielding discipline. The over-focus on sport training also meant the rest of the children's education were neglected. Meaning those who do not make the cut are left with no knowledge and skills to make it in the "real world". And the growing middle class in China increasingly do not want their children subjected to such rigor with questionable future for graduates who don't make it to the top national teams. Thus sport schools have started declining in China. Those that remained have also started to give them more regular education to supplement the sport training. I hope they are truly improving. It's criminal how athletes have been tossed after they dedicated there lives to the state. Yes, there were quite a few cases where former athletes were abandoned by the Chinese state after their careers were over and left to fend for themselves with no skill support or any kind of job training to prepare them for their post-athletic career. Its like being kicked out of your home when you were 16 with no preparation to tackle the challenges of life out there in the wider world. While some managed to make a decent career for themselves working as government bureaucrats, coaches, teachers or even succcesful entrepreneurs (e.g. former gold medal winning gymnast Li Ning became a billionaire after founding a sport wear brand named after him), many other ex-athletes fell into destitution and some were even found begging on the streets in rags. But to be fair and to their credit, for the China's volleyball NT, things are actually improving in the educational aspect. The team managers recognized that they needed to better support and train their athletes to transition to a life away from the court. Several of them have university bachelor degrees or is studying for one (i.e. Zhang Changning and Gong Xiangyu studies at Nanjing Normal University), their tuitions paid by their teams. Former captain Wei Qiuyue has a masters degree from a Tianjin University and Hui Ruoqi is currently studying even for a PhD! So hopefully things will continue to improve in that aspect. Some who continue to send their kids into sport schools are often poor folks who saw that as the chance for their offsprings to improve their social mobility if they can achieve success. Zhu Ting is a classic example. She came from a poor peasant family. To supplement his meagre income from growing crops, her father also worked as a motorbike mechanic as a side business. But even so, life was tough. Zhu's Dad saw the sports school as a way to allow his daughter to escape the rough life as a peasant that he endured. And it wasn't easy going for Zhu Ting at first, as she complained to her Dad how demanding the regime in the sports school was. But fortunately, she adapted eventually to her new surroundings and achieved success.

But like can we get a translation? I only know xie xie. JLP is trying to get the youngsters to have some experience. And the more experienced players will join in the second half of the VNL.

Back to my USA vs. CHN delusions. depends on how big of a hole China's B team will dig, and if the A-team can get themselves in at least 3rd place in the preliminary round.
Because given the rosters that have been released there is no doubt in my mind that USA will be #1 in pool play. I'm not saying they'll win every match, but I don't expect any other team to be #1 in pool play after 15 rounds.

Canada's been posting clips from their scrimmages. Looks like their A team is
King/Van Ryk, Gray/Howe, Cross/White + libero. (I didn't notice Maglio but there's a chance I missed her)

So long story short, based on the released rosters, seems like winning the 2021 VNL will come down to between US and Brazil...

(I didn't notice Maglio but there's a chance I missed her) No way White should be starting over Maglio…but it is a new coach, so you never know. Top line should be: Gray / Howe or Livingston OH Van Ryk OPP Cross / Maglio MB Bujan (libero) King (S)
