depends on how big of a hole China's B team will dig, and if the A-team can get themselves in at least 3rd place in the preliminary round.
Because given the rosters that have been released there is no doubt in my mind that USA will be #1 in pool play. I'm not saying they'll win every match, but I don't expect any other team to be #1 in pool play after 15 rounds.
I mean OH: ZCN, LXT OPP: someone MB: WYY, ZYX SET: YD LIB: WMJ Is still pretty strong compared to most teams' starters. Can even be competitive against the top teams they will face in Weeks 1-3. I expect China to finish in the Top 3 in the prelims. The only teams I see them struggling against during this first half is with Brazil, Turkey, and maybe Japan. They should be able to keep up with everyone else. China has been trying to convert Liu Yanhan to opposite, but it just isn't working. With this group I would instead keep her at outside hitter next to Liu Xiaotong (like with what they did at the 2019 VNL Finals) and move Zhang to opposite. The only worry is how well the reception line will be.

If the coaching staff wants to consider DLY or YHY for some reason, then whatever...
for OH/OPP, the only pin hitter who can play opp is the newly crowned captain, ZCN. I'm guessing LYH/LY will be one of the outsides (OH1), and LXT/DF the other outside (OH2)
ok, maybe this team won't get bullied so hard...

Liu Yanhan and Li Yingying both had fans say they should try OPP, and it never really worked for some reason. OTOH Zhu and Zhang you can put them either on the left or the right without much fuss.

hope they can play their best against teams like Turkey and Brazil.
Zhang had one bad match against Japan during the Tokyo Olympic test match and Chinese fans act like it's the end of the world. Some are even saying Yao Di had a better performance over Ding Xia in that match and that her spot of the Olympics is safe while Ding Xia should compete with Diao Linyu for the substitute spot. lol. I can't.

tbf Yao Di did play better than Ding Xia, but first: one was a sub while the other was a starter, and second: that doesn't mean Ding Xia should be competing with Diao Linyu for the "2nd setter" lol

I just hope Yao Di can keep up that performance during this first portion of VNL because if she does bad those Chinese fans are gonna flip flop so hard and say that she doesn't deserve to be in the Olympics.

I think she'll be ok. She has her provincial teammates, works well with ZXY, and she's usually pretty good at setting short hitters.

Another plus about her being the starting setter with this group is that she's familiar with these players being part of the B Team sent for previous tournaments. She knows how to set them and what works best with this roster. The only real missing piece of this B Team from previous ones is that Gong Xiangyu is not here.

That's another point of concern, none of the pins have that good floor defence.

Bottom line, best to take Chinese fan reaction with a...grain of salt. If China does well in one match, then their consensus is that China is unbeatable. If they do badly in another match then its the end of the world and Lang Ping must step down. I guess context and perspective isn't their strong suit...

More like 20 truckloads of salt...

I think it will be fun to see the "OG" girls come back and play together again, but hopefully the young players get a lot of good quality experience!

Whoever wrote "will lead a group of young players..." did not check the age of this new roster. Only 4 players were born after 1995 (3 in 1998 and 1 in 1996), everyone else was born in 1992 or below.
Love the Thai golden girls, but it probably would've been best to leave them out of VNL this year and just play with 15 teams. They are not prepared for this compressed tournament. This group is older than the previously mentioned roster and some of these veterans have had some nagging injuries. Another unfortunate thing for them is that this roster didn't even have time to train together as a team. They'll be doing individual online home training until they leave for Italy on May 20.
