Wait so...let's say the Olympics give you 1000 ranking points for gold, 500 for silver. If this was tennis, since China won in 2016, they gained +1000. However, for 2020, they'd have to defend that 1000, so if they get silver they'd get +500 but -1000. How does volleyball ranking deal with the big tournaments? You get no points for tournament results. Just plusses and minuses for individual match results. Really?? That seems...unwise. But maybe I'm just used to tennis rankings oof. But also to be fair tennis doesn't put any weight into *who* you beat in individual matches when they dole out points for tournaments, it's just however much value the tournament is given.

I understand point distribution for individual matches, but how does volleyball ranking deal with the big tournaments and defending points? This was the old system. The new one just takes individual matches into account.
More important events have more points on the line. The same loss at VNL would lose only 80% of the points you'd lose at the Olympics. (Since the weighting factors are 40 and 50)
Hmm. Ok, that makes sense.

Yeah this is more ... equitable (?) with high ranked teams such as China, italy, and Serbia sending B teams, if they lose to lesser ranked teams then they'd lose a lot of points. So the rankings may fluctuate more.

Tournament results were fine for ranking the top 8 or so. This does a better job of ranking that next tier. How do Germany, Netherlands, etc compare to Argentina and Kenya? The old system would award points to ARG and KEN just for being in the event. But if you’re using world rankings for things like World Championships qualification, having a better way to compare the teams in the 15-25 range is important. And I believe this is much better at THAT. (For what it’s worth, this is basically what FIFA uses for soccer)

In any case, Serbia and Italy seems mighty confident that sitting out the VNL for their top players will benefit them at Tokyo. That's a rather big gamble, one that has not worked for other teams trying that strategy in the past. What makes them so sure it will work this time? What's the difference here, if any?

How many medals has Italy won at the Olympics again? And didn't Serbia just earn their first ?
