In any case, Serbia and Italy seems mighty confident that sitting out the VNL for their top players will benefit them at Tokyo. That's a rather big gamble, one that not has worked for other teams trying that strategy in the past. What makes them so sure it will work this time? What's the difference here, if any? How many medals has Italy won at the Olympics again? And didn't Serbia just earn their first ? Precisely. Unless they have some secret ingredients that gives them really good confidence of getting on the podium at Tokyo, this is pretty questionable as strategies go.

We need strong serve for shaky reception of italy and setter inconsistency for italy to stop eguno. Well at least to delay her attacks. 3 blockers always and libeROB fron the back.

The secret ingredient is Egonu I honestly think stacked national teams at the top will put up a better fight than stacked Turkish or Italian teams do against her in the domestic leagues . She's incredible but so is full strength China and USA.

While I do think Kelsey and LC have a good chance to dig her, it won't happen that much just because of how physical Egonu is. But still, they've probably got the best shot at it compared to other teams. If we had a better left back defender, our floor defense would be *that* much better. In terms of better defensive setters...y'all will hate me for this but I think Wolosz is a really solid defender. She won't play us this summer though. I think Ding Xia from China is probably the best floor-defending setter along with Carlini. Ding Xia can play some defense...I think she's an underrated piece of China's success these last few seasons.

She's incredible but so is full strength China and USA. I do too, but Italy's more than just Egonu. De Gennaro and L. Bosetti are excellent floor defenders. Sylla/Pietrini are decent OH1s (although the latter's reception is not that good)
I was looking at China's matches with Italy and one of the reasons for the 2018 WCh SF loss was the inability to control Sylla (compared to 2019 VNL when she went off)

I agree - I've always thought Ding Xia is the straw that stirs the drink for China, and they never look *quite* the same when they have the back-up setters in. Zhu gets a lot of the MVP accolades (deservedly so) but I think Ding Xia is what makes China go

Maybe the taller hitters like Hill and JT is necessary.

She's the lefty who subbed in during Gold Medal match against Serbia, was their starter at the WCH, and has been the starter for the whole quad...she also wrecked us at the World Cup (although to be fair everyone on China was firing that day *shudders*) Edit: I don't think she was the starter for the whole Olympics.
