When's the last time the team with the best "pure" setter won? Lilley would be the first since.. Glass in 09? Didn't Micah Hancock win a couple? Girl was a gamer, but she wasn’t the best pure setter in the country in any of her years. Especially not in the 2 years she won (Carlini).

By the way, how tall does a setter have to be to go against the #1 team in the country and help dismantle them? Apparently, not that tall.

Carlini and Poulter did not have as many options as Lilley has, or Glass had.

I would take the intangibles that Hancock and Hunter had over a pure setter.

OK, I'm not counting this year because every volleyball fan knows this pandemic has ruined this season. And if you don't believe me go put house money down in Las Vegas that Stanford will only match their win total next season. But, research the schedules from 2015-2019 for Big 10 teams and Texas all the way through the season to the final match in the tournament and see who played the toughest schedules. Texas' schedule has been rated one of the toughest in most years. Because the Big 12 overall is not as tough, Texas plays an OOC schedule that is typically stronger than the top Big 10 teams. Also quit using the COVID excuse because the Big 10 fell short of the championship game. I didn't see you preaching that before the match. Every team had to deal with COVID. You still don't get it do you. The powers to be took away the decision for teams for Covid not the players. And no, if you bother to research it Texas didn't play any tougher schedules in OOC than the top Big 10 teams did. Texas was part of the Vert challenge with Florida, Oregon and Nebraska for four years. The Big 10/ Pac12 challenge was matched with each other. Then the grind of the conference season began. To put the importance on scheduling one only has to look at Stanford. Stanford is on the quarter system and start classes usually the last week in September. Their first match is usually the last week in August as with everyone else. But they get almost a month of what I call a "mini pro volleyball camp". There are no classes etc, that I am aware of, so they recently started upgrading their OOC schedule traveling around the country playing more top ten teams like a pro team immediately when Hambly took over. They were staying in hotels etc. but without the players dealing with the stress of classes. What they did was great for volleyball but most fans didn't understand their advantage as their team was dealing with their athletes getting acclimated with school etc. The most outrageous scheduling is in Alabama football. No doubt the SEC is a very tough conference. But check out Alabama's little quirks in its scheduling. Their one week off break seems to be before the LSU game every year and in the mist of the conference season in late November when every team in America is playing in conference teams ( except maybe Notre dame) Alabama plays a OOC home game against the likes of Charleston Southern, Chattanooga, Mercer, The Citadel, Western Carolina the week before the Iron Bowl against Auburn every year. And of course they manage to win by an average of 55-60 points. In other words they are resting their starters. You and I both know in volleyball trying to play an OOC that late in the conference season against that low caliber of a team before your big rivalry match would bring ridicule.

So, can we start saying that what the likes of O'Neal, Butler and Phillips is more what the USA is looking for now or in the future for their middles? Or Rettke with her height who can run an effective slide the most needed?

I also think Hancock's results were better than any purity Carlini possesses. Um. Hancock's results were more than the sum of HER parts. She is a great player, but she had so much around her. Carlini did not. She still doesn't and she elevates everyone with whom she plays.

Or Rettke with her height who can run an effective slide the most needed? It'll never be Phillips or O'Neal. Neither are great blockers. Rettke has already proven herself against the best in the world. Not sure why this us even a question.
