It isn't even that complicated. No one watches an OH crush a bic and says "Nice serve". A pass is a pass - you pass a serve. A dig is a dig - you dig attacks. A dig might lead to an in system swing, it might lead to an OOS attack, it might result in a free ball or even be an overdig, but the location does not change the fact that it is still a dig. It doesn't magically become a pass. If a parent wants to yell "Nice pass" when their kid makes a great dig down the line, that is their choice. But to argue that the terminology is 'silly' and that the word pass should be used to describe every first contact fails to understand why we need two words to describe these two different skills. The first poster's confusion about why Cook was looking for a transfer libero is an example of why we use two different words. As you did with your reply "I don't you know what passing is ....". ^ This sentence makes no sense but as I was reading it I realized why you and the Nebraska fan are struggling to understand. He registered in 2021 and you're a Minnesota fan that registered in 2018. Of course you don't know what passing is! It is not your fault. "You don't know what you don't know". I am sure the Huskers and Gophers will improve in SR one day but for know, just know that when a coach talks about passing, they are referring to the first touch by the receiving team after the serve. If a coach talks about digging, they are talking about floor defense. Hope that helps!

Lol omg I just read that whole mess. It’s obvious that passing = serve receive. Digging = defense. Basically no one says “digging a serve” or “passes a spike”

I was perfectly comfortable letting this drop, and I will thank you for doing the same, or at least leave me out of it.

Basically no one says “digging a serve” or “passes a spike” So let me repeat my question: then what do we call the first touch of a free ball? It certainly shouldn't be counted as a "dig", though it is "defense"...

You know you are making a big deal of this when you're worrying what to call a free ball...

JWO took the free ball…. Nicole Davis sent the free ball over the net… etc It’s not a pass or a dig This is historically incorrect. Davis sent the free balls backwards.

You know you are making a big deal of this when you're worrying what to call a free ball... One more, and then I move on: so how come "serve receive" can't just be serve receive, it gets to be both "serve receive" and "passing", but "first touch of a free ball" has to be *only* referred to as "first touch after serve receive"? So long as they can be differentiated when necessary by their other designations, why can't they both be short-handed as generically "passing" from time to time?

I think I said this 42 posts ago... but you call a freeball/pass/dig/serve whatever you want. You can say "great dig" when your kid passes a top spin serve if you want. But this started because a poster misinterpreted John Cook's desire for better passing as him wanting better floor defense. If John Cook is talking about passing he only means one thing and it is not freeballs or digging.
