Last year is a free year. It doesn’t count toward anybody’s eligibility if the prefer. Every sophomore who played as a freshman can receive a fifth year. Franklin played in seven matches last year in a 15 match season. No way she would even qualify for a medical redshirt. She committed to play at Princeton for her freshman year of 2020-2021. But then COVID came, and the whole of the Ivy League decided to not play hockey at all. So at Christmas, she transferred to Wisconsin, where she played the 2021 half of the year, and won a national championship with the Badgers. That year, of course, doesn't count against her four years of eligibility, or her five year "clock".
For the 2021-2022 hockey season, she has been chosen to be a candidate for the US women's national team which will form the 2022 US Olympics team. Hockey players in consideration for the Olympics for the US and Canada "centralize" for the entire year; they don't play college hockey and probably take few if any classes (remotely). And because of that, their five-year "clock" is officially stopped.
So when Eden arrives on campus to start the 2022-23 school year, besides having already won an NCAA championship and likely an Olympic medal, she will be a "freshman" with four years of eligibility and five years in which so use them. She could still be playing for Wisconsin in the spring of 2026...
... except 2026 will again be an Olympic year. And if she was "centralized" in 2021-22, there's a pretty good chance she'd be "centralized" in 2025-26, which would again stop her "clock", and delay her final competition year until 2026-27...
... unless somewhere in the middle of all that, she were to take a regular non-Olympics related redshirt year. In which case, she could be playing that last year of competition in 2027-2028! She'd be a couple months short of her 26th birthday by then.
