Each host getting to pick one team to place into their pool is the dumbest thing ever. Has that always been a thing? i laugh a lot on that! it's brand new, Serbia picked Azerbaijan smartly. Were Azerbaijan, Turkey, Italy or Poland the only choices? If so, why the heck was Azerbaijan there? Is their CEV ranking really high for some reason?

Well, it has happened before, sort of Before the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship, which was held in Bulgaria and Italy, it was somehow rigged that Poland was in the same group as Bulgaria. Why ? Because Bulgaria is the third most popular holiday destination for Poles (after Turkey and Greece) and there's always a lot of Polish people on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast in the summer, especially in Burgos and Varna (where Polish king Władysław III died fighting the Ottoman Empire in 1440). Bulgarians want to take advantage of it, and sell more tickets. I guess the same rationale is behind Croatia inviting Italy and Romania inviting Turkey. Azerbaijan in Serbia makes less sense, but maybe it is also somehow justifiable.

Is their CEV ranking really high for some reason? no, they weren't the only available. i tried to find some sense on their choices so... this is the actual CEV ranking: Serbia (1), Italy, Turkey and Netherlands (2) - yeah, they have exactly the same points-, Azerbaijan (5), Russia (6), Germany (7), Bulgaria (8), Croatia (9), Poland (10), etc Knowing Serbia, Bulgaria and Croatia are hosts, we have ITA, TUR, NED, AZE, RUS, GER and POL available. Turkey can't be in the same group of Serbia cause they are top 2 of the last edition, so were alocated in pool D (right inverse). the organization of Serbia picked Azerbaijan for some reason (imo they aren't a very consistent team and are pretty above of the others available in number of top players and rising stars). Croatia picked Italy for some reason (maybe a good test for the team?, italian coaches on both sides) and Bulgaria choosed Poland (they were playing friendly matches before the Golden League), the one surprised me cause even in serpentine system they couldn't be there (#10). Nobody picked NED... so the other 3 available were put in Put 1 to the draw with Belarus (11). yeah, AZE are on top 5 because they finished the 2017 Euro's 4th at home, made it to the last World Champs and played the last Euro League... CEV ranking maybe doesn't reflect the reality too.

Brazil and Canada to pool B, USA and Russia to pool C, Poland with Bulgaria in B, Argentina with Italy in Pool A. It made sense for me. Thanx for the curious info!!

Omg, Boskovic sisters clash in pool A right in Belgrade, Serbia... that's history been written. Its the first time Bosnia made it to the main event. for those who don't know, Tijana is bosnian too and played alongside her sister in the serbian league for a few years. Tijana was naturalized, popped up on Euro under ages and chocked the world in 2014 WCH. the older sister made it to the NCAA for a college i can't remember right now. They met each onther on volley last season in Turkey, Kuzeyboru x Eczacibasi. Nice pathway!

Played with McKenzie Adams for a season (or maybe two) too
