Carlini has got to start setting Plummer more on the off passes. Just throw it up there & let her clean it up. She may as well make up for some of her off passes.

I agree but she looked better than Plummer today Plummer got in her own head and well.. Canada almost exclusively served her. Yesterday, Larson was taking the pressure away from her allowing her to hit well. I would still pick Plummer over Wilhite. She has more upside and plus she is just starting out. More room to improve and you just can’t teach height.

Someone said it earlier, but Canada did a good job of getting low and over, which gave Plummer trouble in-system because she usually doesn't just go clean over the block with the faster sets and she couldn't hit down the way she usually does on the high balls. (just my thought, might be wrong)

Sorry, but I have to disagree…Van Ryk is not the only player who can hit. There are players who can score. Cross and especially Maglio are hugely offensive threats on their Turkish teams. Mitrovic and even Howe can put the ball down. But I do agree we need Gray. Van Ryk can bang a ball for sure, but she makes her share of errors. Her being the only hitter foe the team is not the answer. Unfortunately, King made it look like Canada only had one player. Yesterday she forced balls to her and other players (who were scoring) were open. I like King a lot but this isn’t AU and she needs to raise her level and distribute the ball more wisely. She has nice hands but I haven’t been overly impressed. I’d take some of Carlini’s sets over hers today in a heartbeat. to be fair, I didn’t say Van Ryk was the only player who can hit. I said she was the only one scoring. Taking her out just put the others in tough situations because there wasn’t a player to relieve pressure from the rest of them. Having Gray would significantly help the other players score as well. Having both Gray and Van Ryk would undoubtedly make the rest of the team perform better too offensively. King has shown good stretches of setting but also some poor stretches. Some of her sets to Maglio today didn’t allow Maglio to get full swings. All of that being said, I definitely want King to stay in. She is probably the only Canadian setter who looks good when she’s on her game. Altogether, I’m just a little frustrated with the level of play. I know they can play much better than what they’d shown in sets 2-4 yesterday and sets 2 and 3 today. Van Ryk was the only player scoring because she was the only one getting the ball most of the time…hard for someone else to take the pressure off her if they don’t get the sets. I think that is why I am frustrated with King. Definitely, she is the best Canada has right now, and she will improve as well. I know she can do better. She had a much better connection with Maglio in 2019, but hey…they have had only 3 weeks together since them. She need to set a faster tempo, higher ball to Maglio to get her involved (smith’s sets to her were too low too). I think it’s partially coaching. She needs to ensure King is involving the middles whenever there is a good pass…I remember one time (haha…maybe not the only time) they had a beautiful pass and Maglio lined up in the middle and she forced it to Van Ryk who had two blockers camped out. That has to be frustrating. Mitrovic didn’t get any quality sets today and mostly OOS hits. I think she can develop into a really good hitter as well. Good to see her getting experience. Okay, enough said. They have work to do, and this will be a fantastic learning ground.

And then Nilufer happened.

Did not watch live, so did not participate in point-to-point discussion. As was obvious, thought USA was a mess all around in the 1st. Passing and blocking were sketchy. Drews struggled. They got into a better rhythm as it went on, which is nice to see.
One match, but it seems Drews is the same as ever. When she is on, she is really good. When she is off, she is practically worthless. Good that she went from practically worthless to basically unstoppable all in one match rather than the reverse.
Who was actually available to play today? I am bit confused by roster rules. I thought Poulter was out for this week as one of the 4 who were inactive based on what we saw yesterday, but she was in uniform today. Was she available? Was Hancock in uniform today? I don't know what is going on with all of this. It's so much easier in non-pandemic when you have 14 players who travel somewhere each week and they're all available.

After 3 weeks you can fly in replacements (max. 6)

USA Stats: Plummer: 8k, 4e, 25 att. (.160); 1 blk; 2 aces; 3 digs SWP: 8k, 2e, 23 att. (.261); 3 blk; 2 digs Drews: 19k, 4e, 37 att. (.405); 1 blk; 1 ace; 4 digs Dixon: 5k, 11 att. (.455); 2 blk; 1 dig Tapp: 6k, 10 att. (.600); 1 blk; Carlini: 2k, 3 att. (.667); 2 blk; 2 aces; 1 dig JWO: 17 digs Reception: Plummer: 11 successful, 23 so-so, 34 attempts (32.5%) SWP: 4 successful, 2 so-so, 6 attempts (66.7%) JWO: 3 successful, 3 so-so, 6 attempts (50%) From the FIVB site, so the stats usually require a grain of salt/maybe I'm misinterpreting something. Also, they really went after Plummer in serve reception (as they should). SWP and Plummer fairly even so far…we’ll see how it plays out as things go on! SWP is looking a little more polished, KP has a bigger upside…but Olympics only a couple months away!

Drews came around after a DISASTROUS 1st set and a half. Plummer had the yips passing today. Offensively a few bombs that we're used to seeing, particularly out of the BR, but struggled to get in a rhythm passing then attacking. Carlini is still finding that connection with KP, but it'll get there. Carlini takes a lot of heat, but she tried to find offense especially early when no one was playing well. Drews woke up and SWP contributed along with Tapp.
On to Brazil.

m It sounded like Karch was going to name 14 to play for the week (even though technically he can name the 14 players for each match). Maybe someone misunderstood his intention. Players like Poulter, Washington were dressed and available.

But it almost felt at times like she was ignoring Plummer, especially on the pipe sets. Could just be perception.

I think LC was trying to mix it up as much as she could to get 1-on-1s. The passing wasn't great so it was a struggle. I agree that in-system KP was largely ignored (and SWP a little also) in preference for the MBs and mostly Drews. Thanks god Drews showed up eventually.

Could just be perception. sometimes if a player is getting served a ton, coaches will tell their setters to not set them as much to reduce the load (at least in my experience). plus Carlini might not have that connection fully down yet and in some situations feels more comfortable setting someone else.

I love reading posts from all the experts on here criticizing everything possible from these two matches regarding a team that played their first two matches in - well, a long time. On top of that, the pressure is high on several position players to make the Olympic roster. Give our women a few days before you become Stephen A. Smith.
