Hocker wins. Just over the standard, but I think he's still going to Tokyo based on where his world ranking will be. I hope so.

Well, Centrowitz and Nuguse are definitely going to Tokyo.

so he might get to go? how does that work It's kind of complicated, but if someone doesn't have the standard, they can still get in with a high enough world ranking. People did the math before the race and figured that Hocker would need to run ~3:42 to get enough points if he won the trials. He was well under that.

so he might get to go? how does that work There's some world ranking benchmark (that apparently supersedes the standard. The standard qualifies extras who don't have the WR benchmark). It's complicated - apparently this is the first time World Athletics has done this.

Now the question is does Hocker turn pro. Would be sad for Oregon if he did.

Wow, Knighton makes the team as a high schooler in the 200. He doesn't turn 18 until January.

It's complicated - apparently this is the first time World Athletics has done this. Interesting. I thought it was the other way around. If you have the standard and finish in the top three at your country's trials, you're in the Olympics. I thought the world ranking was to get extra people in who don't have the standard, but it's only if you're above a certain threshold. In Hocker's case, I think they said he'd need to be in the top 45, and he was just outside of that before the trials (he may have been 46th). But like you said, it's complicated.

Apparently it's a Federation gets up to 3. We don't necessarily have to have the trials - could just be picked, though that would never fly with the athletes (or with NBC).

I will say that I don't understand why Oregon didn't make sure Hocker got the standard at some point during the season. Nuguse did it in a heat at the ACC championship meet. I feel like Hocker could have done the same at some meet somewhere just to not leave it to any chance.

Apparently Hocker is in by a mile. He's well in the Olympic rankings after this and wasn't in danger of not qualifying with a Top 3 finish.
