I don't think it's really a competitive advantage, as it's only banned in competition, not at all times like steroids are. I think it's just on there because it's a drug that has been illegal until recently (and still is in some places). It probably shouldn't be on the list, but it is. She shouldn't have risked it. Actually, this is fairly similar to Carl Lewis testing positive for stimulants (also banned in competition) at the 1988 US Olympic Trials, though the US covered that one up. In 2011, WADA published a paper in Sports Medicine discussing the reasons marijuana and cannabinoids meet the criteria. Below are excerpts from this publication that address the three criteria: 1. “Athletes who smoke cannabis or Spice in-competition potentially endanger themselves and others because of increased risk taking, slower reaction times and poor executive function or decision making.” 2. “Based on current animal and human studies as well as on interviews with athletes and information from the field, cannabis can be performance enhancing for some athletes and sports disciplines.” 3. “Use of illicit drugs that are harmful to health and that may have performance-enhancing properties is not consistent with the athlete as a role model for young people around the world”. www.usada.org/athletes/substances/marijuana-faq/Hmm, okay. I guess that would explain why it's banned in competition. Of course, many of these arguments could also be made about alcohol or tobacco. I'm guessing that it will be removed from the list at some point, but either way, she should have known better.

Also, it seems likely that the reason Richardson withdrew from the 200 may have been related to this failed test.

Looks like Prandini is going to get the 100m spot too.
NBC's article made it sound like there was a possibility she could still be included on the relay team.

I'm pretty sure she'll be on the relay team as long as her suspension is only a month. They're kind of stuck with the individual events because of the way that the team is selected. Since she was disqualified in the trials, the new top three get to go because they all have the standard. They have more discretion with the relay team. They have to take the top four finishers from the trials, but there are six spots, and the last two don't have fixed criteria.

This seems to confirm that the suspension is for one month. It's too bad she won't be in the 100m, but I'm pretty confident at this point that she'll be on the relay team, so at least she still gets to go to Tokyo and compete as an Olympian, and she'll only be 24 in Paris and 28 in Los Angeles.

Will Fraser Pryce even have any rivals now? Were any of the other Americans sub 11?
I guess her fellow Jamaicans?

Yes, Shericka Jackson and Elaine Thompson are the other two Jamaicans and likely medal threats. Dina Asher of GB was silver at the last Worlds but I think she's better in the 200. I don't think anyone's catching Fraser Pryce though.

I wonder if any athletes are on TUEs for cannabis for anxiety or whatever. Would be curious to know.
Really sucks for Richardson, but just like with any doping violation it's the athlete (and their team's) responsibility to stay on top of that.

(to allow it)

Was this ever controversial in the track-sphere? I remember watching it and being like "that's allowed?"

McNeal's suspension was upheld. Gabi Cunningham is taking the spot.
