C-B makes her move with 2 laps to go. She's running really smooth.

Great race for Cardama Baez to pull away on the last lap. Happy for her after she came up just short in 2019 (Kelati is probably my favorite collegiate runner of all time, so I couldn't root for Cardama Baez in that race, but I'm happy for her here). Chelangat has to settle for second.

Georgia looks to continue its dominance of the multis, as yet another of their Estonian ringers takes the decathlon. Ayden Owens of Michigan was supposed to threaten but that was always a long shot. Max Vollmer of Oregon completely tanks the 1500, coming in last, and drops from 4th to finish in 8th overall. That was about pre-meet expectations but damn guy, run a little bit. Dude’s like 6’8,” high jumps 7,’ puts the shot 50’-plus, runs the 100 in the high 10’s…I’d love to get him on a beach court for a few months and see what happens.

Well, they don't call the Olympic Decathlon champion the "World's Greatest Athlete" for nothing.

Also, enjoy one of the best moments in the history of outdoor nationals, which prominently involved USC: I saw that one! Unbelievable. Poor Georgia. I assume you actually mean Purdue.

That was super close and dramatic. It ended up USC 53, Georgia 52, Stanford 51. Stanford had a chance to lock it up in the race immediately prior to the 4x4 (5K) as Vanessa Frazier was the PAC champ and had the 2nd best time going into the meet but ended up finishing 4th. That would have been a crazy win for Stanford (helped in large part by 8 unexpected points from Jenna Gray getting 2nd n the javelin).

Georgia had also lost the 2017 title by 1.8 points when Oregon won the 4 x 400 by 22 hundredths of a second over USC. If Oregon finishes second in that race, then Georgia would have won the title by .2 points. They missed out on consecutive titles by a total of 2.8 points. Just brutal for the Bulldogs.

That's also the risk Georgia took by not investing in sprints heavily and therefore missing out on those relay points (not even being part of those finals...). Relays are "easy" points, but I guess you can't argue with Georgia's choices. Funnily enough they're more competitive at nationals than they are at SECs usually.

Sure, I'm not saying Georgia didn't pay the price for pretty much focusing on the field events. Still tough to lose by such small margins.

Thanks for the info. I didn't even think about the team title. That race brought back memories of a legendary 4X400 (probably was still a mile relay at the time) in Texas state championship history and especially among Longhorn fans. Johnny Lam Jones (#2 pick in the 1980 NFL draft) was the anchor and about 40 or more yards behind in 7th place when he took the baton. As you would expect, he won. This was 1976 and he then went to the Olympic Trials where he made the US team in the 100 and 4X100. Finished 6th in the 100 and ran the second leg on the gold medal 4X100. Not bad for a high school senior.

LSU wins the 4x100 in an upset. First final of the night, and the men's title race is already over.

Men's finals are underway. LSU quickly puts another 10 points on the board with a win in the 4 x 100.

1500 up next. Fun fact: the BYU runner in this race graduated high school in 2013. Such a huge advantage for their distance teams to have those overage runners.
