Kenneth Rooks repeats as national champion in the steeplechase. James Corrigan took third, so Ed Eyestone has to be thrilled back in Provo. None of the top three finishers have the Olympic standard, so they aren't officially in and will have to wait on world ranking points. It seems like Rooks is pretty safe to make the Olympics based on world ranking points. Corrigan likely won't make it unless he manages to run the Olympic standard of 8:15 or better in the next week. Track journalist Jonathan Gault reported that he talked to Ed Eyestone, who said they have a plan to try to get Corrigan the Olympic standard, and USATF said that if he gets the qualifying time, then he will be on the team. Corrigan's personal best is 8:21.22 according to his World Athletics page. So he'd need to shave more than six seconds off that to qualify. It will be interesting to see what happens. Either way, this has been a very good cycle for Eyestone. In addition to the steeplechase guys, former BYU distance runners Connor Mantz and Clayton Young (both national champions in college, with Young in the 10K at outdoors and Mantz a two-time cross country national champion) finished first and second at the marathon trials. Update: The Penn Relays added a steeplechase to its schedule, and Corrigan will take his shot at the standard there. https://www.instagram.com/p/C8m8Fr0uIny

I just checked the top American times in the women's 5K and 10K for 2024, and I was happy to see the improvement that Weini Kelati has made. She is my favorite collegiate runner from her time with my New Mexico Lobos, helping the team win the title in 2017 and also winning the individual title in 2019. She didn't make the team in Tokyo, and I thought she should consider a move to the marathon. I think maybe she still should, but she wants to make it on the track first, and I think she has a good chance. She has the Olympic standard in both events, and her 5K time is second-best among Americans and over 10 seconds faster than the third-best time. Her 10K time is the fastest among Americans this year, more than 15 seconds faster than second-place Parker Valby. You never know what will happen in the actual races, but based on this, I'm fairly optimistic. I really hope she makes it, as she's a great runner and person.
Edit: I checked 2023 as well to see if I missed anyone. Alicia Monson, a college rival of Kelati, had easily the best times in both events where she is the American record holder. Unfortunately, she will not be in Paris because she had season-ending knee surgery in April. And actually, I missed that Kelati is only running the 10K. That's probably the right move if she wants to just do one race, as she seems to do better the longer the race is.

There was a Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final tonight, so I didn't watch the trials. The biggest news is that reigning 800 gold medalist Athing Mu fell and finished last, so she will not be defending her title. That is devastating. On the bright side, Anna Hall will be in Paris, as she won the heptathlon.

Itβs always heartbreaking when someone gets knocked out because of a trip up.

Mu didn't look that great in the qualifying round and didn't look good until the last 200 of the semis. She has been hurt and hasn't been racing. She was not a lock to win or even make the team if she didn't fall. Akins would have been tough for her to beat at this point of Mu's season. Still tough way to go out.
Anna Hall is an amazing athlete. It is super impressive how good the men are at each event in the decathlon and the top women are in the heptathlon in each event. Hall going out in 59 in the 800 after all the other events and finishing in 2:04 is so crazy.
Nuguse did what he should have to try to win the 1500. He set a fast pace since he has the fastest time in the field. Hocker is just really strong this season and went by him with about 300 to go and held on. Both looked really good in setting a new trials record. There is very tough competition in the world with Kerr and Jacob but they should be in the mix at Paris.
Valby had one of the top all time distance runner seasons in the NCAAs. She set many records and won 5 individual NCAA titles and executed the right plan for her to make the US Olympic Team by setting a tough pace - even thought she ended up 4th. Way too often these races become tactical and some of the runners with the fastest times don't make a team. She went for it and did all she could to make the team but three women who have been running professionally for years were just faster at this point. But Valby still has a chance in the 10,000 and one of the women who beat her in the 5000 may focus on the 1500 and drop out of the 5000 if she makes the team in the 1500. Valby set up an exciting race and Cranny and St Pierre battled that last 100 and set a new trials 5000 record.
The 110 hurdles is an event where it is so hard for the top men in the world to make the US team. If I was a volleyball coach and I would be tempted to try to recruit a high level 110 hurdles guy, especially if he had some basketball experience as a project as a volleyball player. The top guys are so fast and can jump. Some athlete who has that kind of athleticism and wanted a better chance to make the Olympics maybe would be a good convert to play volleyball.

It isn't nearly the same but sprinters like Coleman will still be in the Olympics on the 4x100 relay. Unlike other track events, the sprinters have a shot of being in the Olympics if they don't finish in the top 3.
