The real question regarding Purdue’s non-con schedule is whether I should draft Kari Geissberger in fantasy Avoid one-stat ponies, you can't ride them far. I doubt she'll serve or play back row this year, and while her block totals are decent for an OH, they share the roster spot with Oppos, who will get more. This concludes my TedTalk. |

You should have just stopped when you realized you were arguing about RPI with trojansc, without knowing what RPI is. Maybe…I know what RPI is but admittedly not every algorithm and it make sense why it adjusts heavily at end of season. My original RPI point is that I disagree with its power at the committee level and believe they rely on it too heavily. No clue trojansc is the resident RPI guru. I do know you are the stat geek in group so I never question, I’ll add trojansc to my geek list. (Which is not a bad thing) meanwhile, I will always believe PURDUE deserved to be in the 2014 tourney…..Boiler Up! RPI isn't an algorithm and it doesn't "adjust heavily" at end of season. The real RPI guru is bluepenquin who gives us futures! (no offense to trojansc). |

Purdue missing the tournament that you really felt wrong. I understand by reading through the previous posts by everyone why Purdue wasn’t chosen, but I still believe that Purdue should have been chosen. Val Nichol and Kiki Jones are some of my favorite Purdue players of all time…and to not make the tournament in your Senior year must have been heartbreaking. I too remember the Penn State game where Purdue took them to 5 sets. Micha Hancock was such a great player. I loved watching her perform. |

My recollection. Purdue's RPI was the main reason they didn't make the tournament that year. Purdue would have to stand in a long line of teams that have felt victimized by RPI. As trojansc has said - based on the criteria used by the NCAA - Purdue was not 'snubbed' that year.
As to why the RPI was much worse than the record would indicate (and I am relying on memory here):
1) This was the first year with Rutgers and Maryland in the Big Ten. Those two teams were bad. The B1G schedule became much less balanced than before, and Purdue had an unusually very bad conference schedule by RPI standards. The scheduled skewed towards playing many of the best teams in conference once and the poor teams twice. This was very unusual from prior B1G schedules.
2) Purdue didn't have a particularly good nonconference schedule. They were used to being able to rely on their Big Ten schedule to help the RPI.
3) This was relatively a down year overall for the Big Ten. Had they as a conference done better (or more normal) in the nonconference, their wouldn't have been the same RPI 'problem' and Purdue and Minnesota would have made the tournament.

Have to remember that Purdue was preseason top 10 that year too, qualifying for the tournament was likely not the top priority when scheduling.
Two other things I remember from that year,
1) there was a questionable in/out call that went against Purdue in the 4th set of the Penn state match when it looked like the boilers may have been ready to seal it. (Not a season defining moment, but may have made a difference if they won that match.)
2) Purdue got swept in their final 3 matches, when that happened it felt unlikely that they were going to make it, deserving or not.
I doubt the boilers will have the same problems again this year, and look forward to seeing them legitimately compete with the big 4 again.

Purdue was very good in middle and opposite last season. Will they get better in other areas to close gap with other Big Ten foes who finished above them? If Newton is healthy and focused? Yes. The 2nd OH spot will come down to three juniors, so hopefully one of them becomes a consistent terminator. Would love to see some improvement in the passing too, which I feel Chinn could give the team. I think we're already there with Bush at setter. Purdue's libero was B1G Defensive Player of the Year, so I think that deserves some acknowledgment too. The libero spot is probably a tight race again this fall, plus we get another Hornung so... upgrade! Definitely think we can give the four teams above us a run for their money in a few months. Most certainly two of them. |

It was relevant in my point that they did actually beat two T25 teams during the season. Every team references their ranked wins along the way. They don’t go back and rewrite after end of season rankings come out. Totally understand your explanation on RPI, which also reinforces how flawed it is. You should have just stopped when you realized you were arguing about RPI with trojansc , without knowing what RPI is. I suppose you know everything, don't you?  |
