Scrimmage update!!I got to watch the last two sets of today's scrimmage via a video feed. Great stuff! Overview: The players switched teams a lot. No one team was ever the same. I had an end line view so it was hard to see everything, but they all looked great in my opinion. Strong serving, great blocking, both setters trying to spread the ball around. I'm not sure how many sets they played, but a lot of great ball was happening. The sets I did see were Team Otec/Cleveland vs. Team Hornung/Newton and then the last set, Starters vs. Bench. Team Otec destroyed Team Hornung 25-9 thanks to Otec going on a 8 or 9 point run from the service line to start the set. The Starters vs. Bench set was actually pretty close. In the end, the Starters won. Defensively, we haven't missed a beat. Players were flying all over the place. The Boiler Block looked great from both sides. The middle competition is going to be fierce between Trammel, Johnson, Colvin, Myers. The Bench: Lots of surprises here. Renner looked really great to me. When her team passed well, she was finding her hitters well, especially Johnson. Colvin/Myers, again, were on point. We've got some great middles who can hit the slide nicely. Colvin's serve is going to cause havoc. Koch came to play. She got a lot of good kills from the left. Brown played OPP, though I don't remember her being a standout. The depth at DS is š³. We are stacked with talent. In the last set, I believe Torrance was the libero for the bench and she held it down. A. Hornung is definitely going to push people for playing time. But the girls that have already been there aren't going down without a fight. The Starters?: Bush is a lock. She did Bush things. Cleveland was a beast. Her connection with Bush looks even better than before. She was pretty much killing the ball at will. Her blocking is just next level. She also played all 6-rotations. Newton was Newton. Solid, made a lot of defensive plays, really good block, served ridiculously tough. Want to see her passing more, even with Hornung and Otec on the floor at the same time. I still think Johnson/Trammel start. They are the strongest combo of offense/blocking. But they'll have to be on every game. The L1 spot is still up in the air. Ellis was solid when Bush was setting her. Kind of quiet when she was on Renner's team. Chinn lit it up. She's also elevating her blocking game. Plus, when she was front row, they didn't pinch her in serve recieve like they did with Ellis/Koch. She was ready to pass. I'm leaning toward her because of versatility, but Ellis is a force and Koch has definitely stepped it up. The libero spot is anyone's guess. Otec and Hornung looked incredible. Both dug some hard shots in left back. They made a lot of plays to keep rallies going. Otec was the better server in terms of getting the other side out of system. Still looked like she struggled some passing out of zone 1 but not like that Kentucky nightmare. When they were on the same team during the last set, Hornung was the libero; Otec DS'd for Chinn. I think it could be a slugfest, but having them both another year is going to pay off big time. Thanks for the write up. I am excited about how deep our Middle position may be this year. Johnson and Trammel were so much fun to watch on TV/online last year. It will be even more exciting to see them in person. I am glad that Colvin and Myers also look good. It will be cool to see Roosevelt Colvin in the stands this year. Do you think that Colvin may redshirt? Or will Shondell need her in case Trammel/Johnson/Myers get injured?

Colvin certainly could redshirt this season, especially if Johnson and Trammel stay healthy. And with Myers already redshirting the spring season because of injury, she's a likely option. I do think Colvin already looks like the next starter next to Trammel. She has the speed, the vertical, the blocking presence, the serve. I think a lot is going to depend on whether Johnson takes that extra COVID year or not.

I enjoyed watching Purdue last season with the exception of the two matches in our Covelli Centre when they provided a big wake-up call to our Bucks. Purdueās defense last year was as good as I have seen in the Big Ten for several seasons. Purdue should be a factor in the league race.

Good news for the Boilermakers. Not such great news for Indiana fans.

Did anyone else go to the Purdue game tonight? Holloway Gym was back to its old self again. It was awesome to be able to watch the team play in love again. Raven Colvin and Emma Ellis came in and brought in a new energy. I love it how if a player struggles, the next woman is up and the struggling player cheers the other woman on. Purdue has so much depth this year. They were not their best in the second set, but got back into their groove and played Purdue level of volleyball. I cannot wait to watch them play again on Sunday against Kansas.

It hasn't been said, but my speculation is passing. Otec has the Defensive Player of the Year, but most times you want your best passer as the libero. IMO, Otec is still by far the best left back defender and second setter that Purdue has, but her passing has cost them from time to time in that role. Hornung has better ball control and that's what this team needs when they mostly pass with 2 players. Hornung is a fantastic libero, though.

Good news for the Boilermakers. Not such great news for Indiana fans. Let's be honest. Compare Purdue before him to his tenure, and he should basically have a contract as long as he wants to coach.

Morgan Burke took a chance with him as a decorated high school coach. Best decision that Burke has made in coaching decisions. Purdue loves him and I think that the Shondells loves all things Purdue. His whole family is at every game. I saw a group of his young grandsons enter the gym with their grandma to cheer Purdue onā¦itās nice to see.

I am sure that Coach Shondell would not hesitate to give Otec the Libero jersey again. Otec is very team first and cheers Hornung on on the sidelines. Jael Johnson was struggling and he didnāt hesitate on letting Colvin come in in the 3rd set.
