Dang. Honestly I was not that impressed with Kurogo. I guess Nagaoka just wasn't up to it. I still don't see this team making it to the medal rounds. Is anybody impressed with Kurogo?
Anyways, can any Japan roster have a greater-than-theoretical chance of beating any one of China/USA/Italy/Turkey/Russia? Maybe a small but reasonable chance against Russia...

How is this fair?
The rules now say that women's soccer teams are allowed 18 players + 4 alternates.
The current rules allow for an alternate to replace one of the 18 at any time during the games, if they cannot return because of a serious injury, which would be verified.
The change they are seriously considering would allow the 4 alternates as part of the full team, with only 18 dressed per match.
I think the women's volleyball national teams need to push for something similar.

I think the women's volleyball national teams need to push for something similar. Im going to guess its because soccer has 11 positions so 22 is a backup for each (like volleyball with 12, but yes I know with libero its not that simple) I wish they would as well... but I dont see it happening

Worldwide soccer rules were changed to allow for 5 subs (+1 in the knockouts, if OT is needed) in each match for all of 2021, including the Olympics. The original rules allowed for 3 subs + 1 in OT.
Most teams take 2 goalies, this change adds a 3rd. So, that leaves room for 19 field players.
Not much different for volleyball, considering most would opt to take a 2nd libero, if they upped the rosters to 14.

So it looks like the difference is that in soccer, the 4 alternates always traveled (right?) because they could replace an injured athlete after the tournament started. In volleyball, if somebody has a tournament-ending injury after the event started, you just stay at 11.
Am I interpreting that correctly?

In olympic soccer that's allowed (it's not in the world cup, for example) Id like to see the alternates rostered (I mean... they're there...) but does that benefit anyone besides the USA? And maybe Italy?

Having a 3-way setting battle play out DURING the Olympics would not help Team USA. I don't think extra roster spaces would help the US.

Carlini is the better setter overall to Hancock (and has the most experience) and Hancock's serve can be used situationally (Hancock relegated to the serving sub role... which is what she'll probably be besides the doub sub) USA wouldn't have to make it or break it with Poulter. I think SWP could be offense that would be used if needed and USA wouldn't have to place all of their bets on MBH or hope for a Kim Hill revival.

I think this is just you evaluating players differently than Karch. He thinks Hill is better than SWP and Hancock is better than Carlini.

But that just further cements what everyone on this board minus like gibby thinks about him. If Karch can't find a way to use two extra roster spots (Carlini/SWP) to benefit his team... well thats just a sign of limited coaching ability.
