Coach Nakagaichi from Japan conducted an interview about VNL/Olympics and he stated his team's condition was improved after he released the Tokyo roster during VNL. I know a lot of people were criticizing the timing from USAV. However, for Japan it helped reduce anxiety and the younger players were able to play more freely/without as much stress during the remaining VNL matches. Also, he mentioned that his team's goal is to get 3 wins in pool play and hopefully get a good quarterfinal matchup. As expected, he believes that Iran, Canada, and Venezuela are must wins to accomplish those goals. they definitely have it in them to challenge Italy imo, winning a match against Poland might be a bit too much. I think Pool A could be very entertaining, not as much as Pool B but still. I’m trying to keep my expectations at a manageable level, but I think Japan can absolutely accomplish the goals that the coach set. Italy will be a tough one, but if all three pins are executing at a high level + the defense/serving is good then I could see it getting interesting. Iran and Canada may be thrillers as well. The thing is, Japan’s success relies on a lot of factors working in unison (and some of the VNL losses highlighted that). Teams like Poland can get away with bad passing or poor serving execution at times because of their physicality and talent - for Japan, there’s much less leeway for that.

I just KNEW Hoag was gonna do this. Loeppky should be going. I understand why Marshall is going, but it shouldn’t be in place of Loeppky.
Although I will say I am happy he did pick Van Berkel. That guy has been consistent for Canada this quad.

Russia’s 14 player list left for contention on the Tokyo Roster:
S: Igor Kobzar, Pavel Pankov Opp: Maxim Mikhaylov, Victor Poletaev MBs: Ilya Vlasov, Artem Volvich, Ilyas Kurkaev, Ivan Yakovlev OHs: Denis Bogdan, Dmitry Volkov, Egor Kliuka, Yaroslav Podlesnykh L: Evgeny Baranov, Valentin Golubev
Muserskiy will not go to Tokyo due to relapse of an elbow injury. I don’t know a full picture of Yakovlev’s health status, but unless they take 4 middles it seems like he won't make the final cut. I read he recovered from his injury but I'm not sure if he is at 100%, plus I don't recall him playing during VNL when he joined the team in Italy. If he’s at 100%, I’d take him over Volvich tbh

A few days ago, there was a 16 man lineup that Italy released for their final stretch of training before the Olympics. It's possible that the lineup is already decided or close to being decided (not sure when the absolute final deadline is), but the final roster has not been announced as far as I can tell. Also, apparently they will play friendly matches with Argentina on July 10th & 11th.
Here's the 16 player list:
S: Simone Gianelli, Riccardo Sbertoli Opp: Ivan Zaytsev, Luca Vettori, Garbielle Nelli OH: Osmany Juantorena, Jiri Kovar, Filippo Lanza, Alessandro Michieletto, Daniele Lavia MB: Matteo Piano, Simone Anzani, Fabio Ricci, Gianluca Galassi L: Massimo Colaci, Fabio Balaso
Exclusions: Davide Saitta, Giulio Pinali, Oleg Antonov, Daniele Mazzone

I'm kinda disappointed in the Vlasov cut (I thought Volvich should've been on the chopping block tbh but he's still a solid choice I guess), but I'm happy that Yakovlev seems to be at 100% because I think he is so dynamic + quick. Thus the final roster is: S: Igor Kobzar, Pavel Pankov Opp: Maxim Mikhaylov, Victor Poletaev MBs: Artem Volvich, Ilyas Kurkaev, Ivan Yakovlev OHs: Denis Bogdan, Dmitry Volkov, Egor Kliuka, Yaroslav Podlesnykh L: Valentin Golubev

THEY CUT VLASOV?! When we say Russia has depth in the middle this is not what we meant 😭 Honestly I feel like Russia's youth is playing much better than their vets (on the men's side) but I guess we'll see what happens soon.

Interesting... I believe I read that alternates for gymnastics would be traveling to Tokyo and posters on the women's forum said that the alternates for VB would travel too but I don't know what the official rules are because that was never confirmed. Besides USA, I haven't seen any roster release mention alternates for VB but I'm assuming they have them just in case? Still unsure if the alternates would travel to Tokyo tho. I looked through the French social media account and couldn't really see any of the (presumed) alternates either.
