Watched both the euro final and the copa America final between Argentina and Brazil. Home field didn't mean squat as the visitors won both finals. Definitely looking forward to'world cup 2022. My favorite sporting event. No, not in all cases. Sometimes home field advantage matters.

I think the EPL is successful BECAUSE it isn't English. The best players from around the world play there. It's like the Major Leagues compared to Korea or Japan or the NBA compared to the rest of the world. If you look at the EPL, most of the English players are role-players because there are others even better. The EPL is a capitalist-ish success.

He says the EPL clubs outside the Big 5 are focused on avoiding elimination, their managers don't have the time and patience to train local kids to develop into the next big star player. They need a ready-made player that can deliver for them then and there, and in most cases those are foreign players. So English players don't get that chance to become great players. I suppose that kinda make sense. If you are not Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City, then your club don't have such a cushy budget like those teams to train and develop players.

Yes and no. It's hard to win major tournaments. The Netherlands has never won the World Cup despite being easily the best soccer country in the world who hasn't. Even with this loss, England's results lately are far more positive than they had been for a while. Since losing in the semis of the 1996 Euros, England has two quarterfinal exits, one in the round of 16 and one in the group stage. They also somehow failed to qualify in one tournament. Since their fourth-place finish at the 1990 World Cup, they didn't qualify in 1994, and they had two quarterfinal exits, two in the round of 16 and one in the group stage. But in the last two major tournaments, they have gone to the semifinal of the World Cup and lost in penalties at the Euros final. Yes, they have yet win a major tournament since 1966, but I think their team is definitely on an upward trajectory, and I think they should be one of the favorites at the World Cup next year.

Forcing English players to fight for places on EPL teams has helped create a golden generation for England, with more to come.
England probably had the most talented team and definitely most talented attackers in the entire tournament. Kane, Grealish, and Sterling probably start for any team on the planet. Mount started and won a CL final (seven ENG players started that match). Sancho is a legitimate star, even if Southgate doesn't realize it.
Also, that blog post is from 2011, when England was consistently underperforming.

Also, that blog post is from 2011, when England was consistently underperforming. You don't think England is still not underperforming? Has anything really changed since then? Come on...

World cup semi and a Euro final in the last three years. Solidly top five in the world and should be one of the favorites at next year's WC. So no, that sounds about right.

Is the only standard of success actually winning a major title? England is objectively doing much better in the last few years than in previous decades.

Argentina had the best player ever for 15 years and they *just* won a major trophy for the first time in Messi's career. Winning tournaments is incredibly hard.

No, that doesn't change the reality England has not won a major tournament since 1966. No one remembers second place...
