Agatha/Duda just lost to China. Great… Brazil always screwing up in pool play China beat Canada 2 in the opening pool match, and they have Argentina next so China will surprisingly come out on top of the pool, most likely. Dudatha might be 3rd in pool…

This is according to Olympics beach volleyball page on Wikipedia so take it for what that’s worth but it says: Knockout stage The round of sixteen pair up will be determined by drawing of lots. The six first ranked teams in preliminary pools are separated automatically. Then, the lucky loser playoffs winners will be drawn. The two best third ranked will be drawn next. And, the last drawing belongs to the second ranked teams. The teams in the same pool from preliminary round can not meet in round of 16.

From that wording, does that mean the lucky loser playoff winners guaranteed won't play the six first ranked teams, as the of the first spots drawn for the 8 knockout matches, 6 are pool winners, 2 are lucky loser winners? Does that mean it's also possible two third place teams can potentially meet in the knockout round, but two second placed teams cannot?

The bracket ended up going like this Based on how placed in groups: 1 Vs 3- Lucky loser 2 v 2 1 v 2 1 v 3 1 v 3 1 v 2 2 v 2 1 v 3- lucky loser

Are the 1 seeds from Pool A and B placed on opposite side of the brackets so technically they won’t meet until the finals?

The blocker’s scream after every winning point must be so aggravating to hear for their opponents….

I don’t understand this reasoning at all… if Kelly is quarantined, Sarah should be too. Yes. And if Phil is being isolated, so should Nick and their coaches. It’s like they JUST discovered this. Jake was taken out yesterday. So I’m guessing Kelly was too. I would think that they would only quarantine firsthand contacts, which Phil, Jake, and Kelly apparently are. All three have tested negative repeatedly, so they are still allowed to compete. Their teammates and coaches would be secondhand contacts, so no need to isolate at this point. But if one of them did end up contracting the virus on the plane, it might not actually become detectible for a week or two, which is why they are being isolated. If one of them did end up testing positive, I’m sure their teammates, coaches, and anyone else who has had direct contact would get moved out of the village into the quarantine hotel.

What happens if one of the players do test positive for Covid at this point? Wouldn’t the team be disqualified instead of quarantined?

No replacements at this point. Tri flew in the day before the deadline. I think tamz posted the rules and scenarios somewhere. It gets crazy if someone tests positive during the knockout phase or medal rounds!

In pool play, they get a DNS (did not start) for their name and can still make the elimination rounds but after that, it’s gets crazy.

Is there a provision for keeping Covid forfeits from determining which third place team is ranked the highest? For example if whoever the Czech men forfeited too finished third in that pool, or tied for it, I assume they would have strong tiebreakers because they got two 21-0 games?
