Barring injuries, I think we'll have no disappointments at least at the top. Hawaii and CP (Not sure of the order) are both tournament and Top 25 teams, and LBSU and UCSB won't be far behind. I'm not expecting an at-large this fall. From what I've seen/heard from coaches around the conference, losing the 2020 season really hurt development. The BW also lost a lot of talent through the transfers, injuries and retirements of players we'd expected to see this fall. Dvoracek, Rasmussen, Fleck, Hellvig, Tuaniga, White, Marjama. That's probably the best player from each of the top 6 schools in the conference, all who have remaining eligibility. The BW was 58-47 through non conference in 2019 but most of those wins came from the top 4 schools. With big questions on each of those 4 rosters, non conference could be a blood bath. I'd love to see the BW get an at-large this fall but I'm not confident we will.

I think Davis will be my team most likely to surprise. Their middles will be as physical as Hawaii's if not more. There ball control looked pretty solid in their spring matches. I also noticed they released there 2021 season schedule: ucdavisaggies.com/sports/womens-volleyball/schedule. They are starting pretty strong coming out of the gate...I think Hawaii, Cal Poly, UCSB, or UC Davis could win it all. Whoever can stay injury free and get their freshmen trained up will be the champs. Hopeful that Davis can finish higher than .500. They recruit talent, but doesn't seem that the coaching staff is able to get the best out of the players.

The conference needs UCI, LBSU and UCSB to keep their programs at a high level every year. I believe these three have the capability to be quality teams that can compete regionally every year and have good NCAA runs on select years. If these three join Cal Poly and Hawaii as capable teams then the conference will be able to get multiple teams in every year because the conference RPI will not be such a drag. Also need Riverside and CSUF to become top 150 type teams so the bottom of the conference is not such a RPI killer. Even in today’s college environment I believe the BW can keep building into a strong volleyball conference competing for deep runs in the tournament. Will a BW team win a national championship, I do not know, but they should be able to cause some damage along the way.
The conference has some very good points in strong academic reputation, quality history in volleyball, historic volleyball programs, great location and weather, beaches near by, players allowed to play both indoor and beach, strong local clubs and high school programs in the area, and nice volleyball facilities in key locations (Hawaii, LBSU, UCI, etc). The conference needs to prioritize the sports they can succeed in, and volleyball is one of them, and find ways to market and provided capital to make things happen. Volleyball is a sport where you only need a few high level players surrounded by quality role players and you can succeed. I believe the conference benefits can enable these programs to recruit the players they need to win.

I feel like you meant to say Long Beach instead of Davis…I feel like UC Davis has actually out-performed based on the rosters they’ve had.

2021 Preview:
After a positive 2018 season, no one had a more disappointing 2019 than the Anteaters who finished the season 5-23. There were moments of greatness (like winning at Hawaii in 5) but they lost 11 of their last 12 matches, including twice to Fullerton. But the good (or bad) news for Irvine is that they will have a new look for the fall 2021 season with only Ofoegbu and Negron the only starters remaining on the roster. Lots of questions for the Anteaters, who need a better finish than they had in 2019!
Some updates for UCI. - Lauren Russ is removed from the roster. - Destynie Villamu is removed from the roster. - Kiani Stanton did not attend any Spring matches. Let's see if she also gets removed when the UCI website roster is next updated to include the 2021-22 freshman class. - Sophie Wood was converted from setter into the starting OPP during the Spring matches. - Amanda Albertini, 6'2, MB is part of the 2020 freshmen class that was omitted from the list above.

Wow UCI is adding 14 new players which is unheard off without a head coaching change. But we can thank Covid for crazy things like that.

What team or teams will be a shocker for good or bad? IMO- I pick CP and LBSU to fight for top, Hawaii will be good but not as good as CP. With Hawaii loosing one of their coach and season starts 1-1/2 months before season starts. No firewpower at both pins... Setters still in question. Please input and prove me wrong, thank you. No doubt Hawaii lost its two biggest hitters in Hellvig and Rasmussen after the COVID season. Next "biggest" hitter is probably the amazing 5'-8" Van Sickle. Aside from the returnees, there are a lot of promising but untested arms. And I'm not sure who will step up as the "floor general" this season. Last year, two senior setters and Rasmussen provided tons of leadership.

BVS would be the ideal captain because she is a senior but she is not very vocal and too laid back sometimes. Skyler is too happy all the time…LOL Robyn could assign the title to the two seniors but I predict Amber will be more impactful.

Amber from Hawaii was such a good find. Not only is she athletic and getting better all the time, its her attitude and fire that makes her have such an impact.

Add Naya Dong to UCSD's roster. Transfer Redshirt Frosh from Univ. Utah.

Conference Hitting Rank (BW matches only): 8th Conference Passing Rank (BW matches only): 8th Conference Defense Rank (BW matches only): 7th
2021 Preview: Losing your HC just before any season is not ideal, but losing your HC before your first season in 2 years, for a program that looked like it was improving, is really disappointing for Fullerton and the BWC as a whole. At least the Titans have Nicole Polster to take over as the interim HC and the program retains key pieces in Julia Crawford and Savahna Costello. What to expect from Fullerton? Not much and hope to be surprised.
********************************************************************************************************************************************************************
*Savahna Costello, Sr, L and Alicia Dennis, Sr, OH have both graduated and will not play this year. *Makenzi Ableman, Sr, 6'1, S graduated in 2020 and played last year in NY. All three are top scholars, Savahna graduated in math and wants to be a teacher and coach. Mackenzi will will be a graduate assistant for the volleyball team that Ashley will be coaching in Louisiana.
Mia Jerue and Anna Hawthorne are incoming freshman class of 2021.
Also add Hailey Black, S, and Lyla Taylor, OH both from Texas and are 2021 freshman.
Thanks bwf2 for getting the 2021 Big West thread started.

If you have checked out Fullerton's schedule, one team in the Louisiana tournament has dropped out and is being replaced by Auburn.
