Couldn't have a Big East thread and no BW thread, so here it is. Hoping for a more successful season than we had in 2020...
2021 Season Preview
After a year off (thanks Covid), the conference will look very different than the last time we saw it in 2019. If you see anything that you know needs updating, please PM me. I'll list teams based on their 2019 record, not where I think they'll finish in 2021.

2021 Preview:
The theme of the BWC in 2021 is 'rebuilding' and so it is fitting that the 2019 BWC champions are replacing 6 of the starters from their 2019 NCAA tournament loss to Nebraska. It wasn't just players the Rainbow Wahine lost, with associate head coach and legendary player Angelica Ljungqvist announcing that she is leaving the team and returning to Sweden for family reasons. But HC Robyn Ah Mow likes a challenge and Hawaii has the roster to compete for another BWC championship. Key returners are Brooke Van Sickle and Amber Igiede, who should be in good shape after playing for UH Beach this spring. Sky Williams will also return as the other MB with Igiede. I expect BVS to play OH because she's too valuable to be stuck at Libero. The other pins are more interesting. Polish OH Martyna Leonik brings 6-ro ball control skills to the floor (but beware Hawaii fans, she passes a lot of balls overhand) that could see her get playing time early, but would a combo of BVS and Leonik lack OOS terminating? Then maybe 6'5 international Opp Ilayda Demirtas can help. A physical RS attacker that brings a heavy arm and good step close, Demirtas could push for PT early. I expect Kate Lang will start at setter and with Ah Mow coaching her I think she'll do well.
Like a lot of schools in the Big West this fall, this will be a new look Hawaii but Ah Mow still has one of the most talented rosters in the conference and I expect the road to the BW auto-bid will still run through the Stan Sherriff Center.
#2 Cal Poly
2019 Overall Record: 21-9
2019 Conference Record: 13-3
2019 Tournament Placement: NCAA Second Round (lost to Stanford 3-0)

*Lea Ungar, Jr, 5'6, DS
Taylor Rose, Jr, 5'8, DS
*Avalon Denecochea, Jr, 6'2, S
*Meredith Phillips, Jr, 6'3, MB
Grace King, So, 5'10, DS

Conference Hitting Rank (BW matches only): 1st
Conference Passing Rank (BW matches only): 4th
Conference Defense Rank (BW matches only): tied 1st
2021 Preview:
After losing Torrey Van Winden to injury in 2019, only to discover she had a ready made replacement on the bench in Maia Dvoracek, lightning has struck twice for Caroline Walters as Poly again loses their star Opposite, this time to a gruesome knee injury. Watching them play in the spring without Dvoracek Poly looked like they didn't know who their terminators were - so it's good news for the Mustangs that 2 x Nevada Gatorade Player of the Year and 2020 freshman OH Tommi Stockham left Indiana via the portal and has emerged in SLO, to play indoor and beach. In a fall of 'what ifs' for Hawaii, UCSB, Davis and Beach, Cal Poly will wonder how good they'd have been with Dvoracek and Stockham on the floor at the same time but with Maia announcing that she will be back in 2022, they might still find out! Even without their starting Opp, the Mustangs have the best returning setting in the conference and a very physical team that should compete with Hawaii for the BWC crown.
#3 UC Santa Barbara
2019 Overall Record: 23-6
2019 Conference Record: 12-4
2019 Tournament Placement: NCAA Second Round (lost to Texas 3-2)

2021 Preview:
With the Gauchos losing 5 of the starters from their 2019 NCAA tournament team, including all of their passers and both of their setters, Nicole Langtagne Welch's team will definitely have some new faces this fall and with a roster of 21, there might be a lot of new faces! What we know for sure is that Opp Tallulah Froley will be a key piece of the offense, as will MBs Deni Wilson and Rowan Ennis. I expect talented Covid freshman OH Michelle Ohwobete to get significant playing time and OH Tasia Farmer's arm is too good not to see the floor. Who will be the passers? More importantly, who will be setting? Freshman Grace McIntosh seemed like she would get the job by default until the Gauchos picked up 6'1 transfer setter Mehana Ma'a (yes, Micha's sister) last week. UCSB have the arms to win the BW but will their first two contacts be good enough? We will find out soon.
#t4 UC Davis
2019 Overall Record: 17-13
2019 Conference Record: 9-7
2019 Tournament Placement: NIVC First Round (lost to Tulsa 3-1)

Conference Hitting Rank (BW matches only): 3rd
Conference Passing Rank (BW matches only): tied 5th
Conference Defense Rank (BW matches only): 5th
2021 Preview:
Another team with a lot of new faces, head coach Dan Conners had to be feeling good about the 2021 season for the Aggies right up until star Opp Mahalia White hurt her knee in the spring. With White, Davis have a competitive roster in the BW that could again, compete for a top 5 finish. Without her, I can't see Aimufua, Webb and Utterback having the firepower on the pins to carry a team that is unlikely to have great passing. Hopefully White is healthy because not only is she a stud, but having recovered from stage four Hodgkin's Lymphoma following her freshman season, she's also one of the easiest kids in the country to root for!

2021 Preview:
With only 9 returners and a ridiculous 14(!) freshmen on the roster, I wouldn't be surprised if name-badges are mandatory at Long Beach practices. That is, if they're actually practicing yet... Too soon? Yes, issues last fall cost Beach their most prized recruit but Joy McKienzie-Fuerbringer and her staff have pivoted to Polish U20 setter Katarzyna Partyka who, at 6'2, brings more size than the setter that shall not be named and Partyka will have the opportunity to run the offense immediately, with little competition at the position. Of course, being thin at setter is always dangerous and if Partyka isn't ready, Beach could return to their Jekyll and Hyde performances of 2019. One piece I am confident in is Jr Libero Nicole Hoff. IMHO she should have been in the jersey in 2019 and from what I saw of her during the spring, Hoff is ready to show that she is one of the top smalls in the conference.
With a non-conference schedule that includes NCAA tournament teams Pepperdine, UCLA, Gerogia Tech and San Diego we won't have to wait long to find out if Beach are capable of winning the BWC this season!

2021 Preview:
With long time HC Jeff Stork's retirement in 2020, CSUN will be led by interim HC Susie Terrusa in 2021 but having been at the program for over 20 years, Susie is no stranger to the BW. 2021 could be a strong season for a Northridge team that returns a strong group of pins (Waggoner, Nevarez, McLeod and Orshoff) and one of the better liberos in the conference in Makayla Bradford. They will, like other BW programs, have a new setter in sophomore Maddie Klungel. If Klungel is ready for her first taste of college volley, the Matadors have a chance to record their first season over .500 since 2014!
#7 CSU Fullerton

Mia Jerue, 5'9, OH
Conference Hitting Rank (BW matches only): 8th
Conference Passing Rank (BW matches only): 8th
Conference Defense Rank (BW matches only): 7th
2021 Preview:
Losing your HC just before any season is not ideal, but losing your HC before your first season in 2 years, for a program that looked like it was improving, is really disappointing for Fullerton and the BWC as a whole. At least the Titans have Nicole Polster to take over as the interim HC and the program retains key pieces in Julia Crawford and Savahna Costello. What to expect from Fullerton? Not much and hope to be surprised.

2021 Preview:
One roster that is returning a lot of starters is Riverside, although with a combined record of 15-41 over the last two BW seasons, I'm sure Head Coach Michelle Patton-Coleman will be looking for better results from one of the larger rosters in the conference. Transfer OH Marina Gonzalez will have the opportunity to be the go-to Outside the Highlanders need.

2021 Preview:
After a positive 2018 season, no one had a more disappointing 2019 than the Anteaters who finished the season 5-23. There were moments of greatness (like winning at Hawaii in 5) but they lost 11 of their last 12 matches, including twice to Fullerton. But the good (or bad) news for Irvine is that they will have a new look for the fall 2021 season with only Ofoegbu and Negron the only starters remaining on the roster. Lots of questions for the Anteaters, who need a better finish than they had in 2019!

2021 Preview:
Bakersfield finally play their inaugural season as a member of the BWC. Expected to struggle to compete in a tough Big West before Covid hit, there looks to be greater parity in the conference now and with a competitive non-conference schedule, HC Giovana Melo will be hoping the Roadrunners get off to a strong start. Ball control will be a question mark going into the season, with CSUB losing primary passers Rafa Bonifacio and Jojo Ishida, but hopes are high for 6'2 OH Lizzie Binder who could take a lot of swings in and out of system for Bakersfield this fall.

Another team that will have a lot of new starters since the last time we saw them, Ricci Luyties' Tritons have scheduled a tough non-conference slate that includes Arizona, Cal and New Mexico State. It will be interesting to see how Castaneda and former UCLA commit Zaria Henderson perform on the pins and to watch Grace Cannon in her first college season. The Tritons might surprise some people...
