So who would do a good job? The Romo of VB announcing. A former good player or coach that can explain the game easily without be annoying. Knows the players well. And has a knack to predict plays.
I’ve always been a Marlowe/Sunderland fan. But who is the next color great?

FWIW, in the last 20 years or NCAA and USA volleyball, I don't believe there has been a color commentator that was liked by more than 3 people not related to the broadcaster. There was a woman on a Texas A&M match a year or two ago that I thought was excellent, and in the match thread there were people taking shots at her.
"This is the most traffic I've seen in Tokyo" was funny. You don't have to like his personality but he has a personality - which is better than a lot of what I've been watching on NBC this week. And face it, Sunderland is dull. He sounds dull, and with a sport relatively nobody understands, NBC needs some frivolity to balance him out. The pair fit well for what NBC is trying to do with their broadcasts.

Some of the things said in the Gold Medal match were over the top... He comes across as incredibly pompous... "Stop talking about the past and let me show you the future" ... He screamed at the R1 over the poor call in against Larson (I did too... But my hypocrisy knows no bounds)... The amount of tension between the two announcers and the need for KB to be "right" is silly... I'd rather listen to KK and that's a tough thing to type...

I’ve always been a Marlowe/Sunderland fan. But who is the next color great? I've seen Marlowe and Karch call Pac-10 games. There was this weird prerecorded piece they did where they attempted to serve left-handed. Something about a right handed player who was serving lefty because of a hand injury.

He's a nearly 50 year old man who had a mid-level playing career but acts like he is ready to play today. He talks like he played on medal winning teams and that he was an innovator. He did not and was not. Other sports in these Olympics had far more accomplished former players as commentators and none that I heard talked about their own playing days (glory days for Barnett?) as much as he does.
He also knows far less about the current international game than he pretends he does. My favorite example from the mens tournament is his discussion of the current USA team as an *innovator* in running back row combinations one zone away from the middle attacker instead of right over the top. Other countries were doing this at least 2 cycles ago. It is not something that Speraw and Thornton introduced to the world this cycle. He also said, seriously, that he would have a Barnett coached team send free balls over to zone 5 as a surprise move because every team sends them to zones 1 and 2. He apparently has no idea why teams send free balls mostly to zones 1 and 2 and that the surprise value of sending free balls to zone 5 is zero value. This is basic stuff that a self-proclaimed expert should know.
I'll give this much credit. In the elimination matches he talked less about his own playing days than he did during pool play. Perhaps that is a sign of progress. Or perhaps it is because he has so little experience in Olympic playoff matches.
