I wrote this earlier, but thoughts... USA WNT does not run any combination plays. Are we too predictable? Pins, middle 1s, slide by Washington, and pipes in the backrow. Should we not run any plays? We Can barely run our quick tempo offense now, Id rather not add complexity lol. For the most part our plays seem to cover all the main attack lanes. I’m not sure running combo plays would help too much, we actually got single block coverage a decent amount of the time, esp when we went middle. With our fast offense we don’t even need to move our pins around. If the setter is deceptive you can always have a gap in the block. Also their in-system offense is the least of their problems

What are the odds of two twisted ankles?? Maybe it’s time for different shoes for team USA.

Justine was the glue that held it all together last night-I'm SO happy for her. She is killin it!!!!! They said we would have to "Out-team" the others to win this, and I'm believing that more every day and now being out 2 starters. Kudos to Hancock for coming in and running the show after being a cheerleader since the start of the games.

Egonu’s performance was one of the worst I’ve seen from a top-5 player in the world in a long time. She gave absolutely nothing. she’s been that bad this whole olympics It’s the hair…..a reverse Samson effect.

Where was JWO during the Mary Lake try out VNL season? I LOVE ML, but JWO should have been training with this team for the last 5 years.
What if………. Kelsey Robinson had embraced her libero role. Would they have even looked at JWO? No pandemic. Would Courtney be the libero? 😐 Hitler hadn’t attacked Russia? 😉

While I don't think Hancock is the answer for a gold, her floor defense is better, she is setting middles in front better, and she is getting better block touches. Granted, her block touches were against smaller outsides for Italy. Her placement has caused some connection issues. Good and bad, I guess. 🤷♂️ That said, I'm hoping everyone a full recovery...Thompson in time for semis, Jordan after the tourney.

Would they have even looked at JWO? They probably wouldn’t have. But it’s good that Kelsey didn’t want to be libero because JWO is playing sooooo good. She’s the best Olympic libero the US has had since I started watching them in 2008.

I really liked Hancock's setting in this match over Poulters. Everything felt more natural and not forced. I think there was better ball distribution that included the middles and wasn't just a force it outside set. I kind of want to keep seeing Hancock in there setting. And no, that doesn't mean I want to see Poulter not get better.

I think there is an interesting psychology at play with the USA team. Starting setter is out with injury. Starting opposite is out with injury. Ego and comparison will always be an element of team's sport, but I've always felt that USA players were particularly prone to be a bit fragile in the ego and comparison trap. There is a level of comfort and confidence that comes with knowing YOU have to get the job done. I saw that comfort and confidence spark in the 4th and 5th sets last night. I'm eager to see if it continues into the rest of the tournament.
