After China has been confirmed to be unable to advance to the elimination round, Lang Ping is giving strong hints she is resigning, making a public statement of apology, choking back tears, to Chinese fans for the team's underperformance. She also said she is "too tired" to carry on after Tokyo and its "time for a younger generation of coaches" to take over the team. Her contract ends after Tokyo anyway, but I guess she is giving strong hints she is done coaching the team in any case: Lang Ping's Apology to fans (google translate): translate.google.com/translate?sl=zh-CN&tl=en&u=https://2020.sina.com.cn/2021-08-01/doc-ikqcfncc0175807.shtmlLang Ping: "I'm too tired and want to rest. I should let the young coach lead the women's volleyball team forward" (google translate): translate.google.com/translate?sl=zh-CN&tl=en&u=https://2020.sina.com.cn/2021-08-01/doc-ikqcfncc0181990.shtmlAlso, Chinese news are reporting that Zhu Ting was supposed to have hand surgery in 2020. When the Olympics got delayed, that plan was thrown off. Question is, who can replace Lang Ping in China right now? There are no obvious candidates...or is there? wasn't she already set to retire though? there were articles of how she would not be continuing after her contract ends in 2020 but because of covid it was extended for another year so that she could be with the team still for the olympics.

I recall reading that LP is moving back to CA. Is this still true? I believe her daughter is in LA or BArea. Maybe it is why the chinese boss wanted to punish her. USA please rehire her. No re-treads, thank you. And that includes Hugh, Jamie and Tom.

Its the circumstances of departure that matters here. Going out on a high with her team on the podium (as originally expected) vs leaving on a low note of historically worst ever performance.

Lang Ping does not have total control of her roster. Each Province has a Department of Sports and the total numbers of medals won by each province is considered a great measure of success for that province’s sports department. So there’s a lot of political lobbying by each province to have as many athletes on the team as possible. If this is the case, makes one wonder what players JLP would have liked to coach in these last two years.

Given how ungrateful and nasty Chinese fans are now in hounding Lang Ping, I wouldn't be surprise she thinks: "I've had enough of this b.s, I'm going to live closer to my daughter in the US". I mean, if you guys think VT posters lately have been mean and salty, you should see what I'v been reading in the comment sections of Sohu and Sina websites from Chinese volleyball fans. The Chinese posters there are attacking Lang Ping mercilessly in the most mean-spirited ways you can think of. Granted, I can understand they are upset at the worst performance of the Chinese volleyball team in their Olympic history, but the sheer nastiness on there makes VT looks real tame and calm in comparison. These online Chinese trolls are called "Online red guards" in China. What does "red guard" means? Those were Chairman Mao's attack dogs, armed gangs of young people brainwashed by Mao's little red book to attack, humiliate, torture and kill people deemed to be enemies of Mao during the "Cultural Revolution", a period of turmoil in the 1960's to 70s when Mao attacked his own communist party to purge his enemies. Now since Mao's death, the Chinese Communist Party has disavowed the madness of the Cultural Revolution, but some of its after-effects still linger to this day, such as the sheer "venom" in personal attacks to people deemed as "persona non grata". Which is why these people attacking Lang Ping now are called by other Chinese as "Online Red Guards". So if I am Lang Ping, why would I still live in a place subjected to such treatment online and in the press? chill. they are attacking her because she ran the team into the ground. The discourse on weibo is very accommodating towards athletes (e.g. Xu Xin and Liu Shiwen losing tt doubles gold). The women's soccer coach also got flamed because of an inept roster selection and leaving out many star players. I call BS. The Chinese training system BEFORE LP always ran players into the ground. I know a handful of former Chinese players who were in the pipeline until they get seriously injured and were jettisoned by the program as if they weren't human, they told some horrendous stories, particularly in the provincial teams. LP eased up on the physical training and saved a few careers.

I thought Lang Ping had some health issues that is making hard for her to coach and travel?

I thought Lang Ping had some health issues that is making hard for her to coach and travel? The Party makes it difficult to travel where you want, to do your job your way, and is a constant threat to one's health. But you're saying besides the Party, she has other health issues?

If the political maneuvering did cause the CNT’s demise, wonder if JLP will name names and what they did. Granted she can write a biography or give an interview after moving state-side. She wrote an earlier biography and why she decided to move to the US in the first place after her playing career ended. Partly it was to get away from the attention and also to learn something new (how to coach). She also mentioned she could not become a government official like other retired athletes. Because being a bureaucrat in China means you have to do ethically dubious things, tell bold faced lies and so forth, which she said she could not do. When she briefly worked as a bureaucrat after her playing retirement, she was made a scapegoat for something that wasn't her fault. That cemented her determination to get away from China for a while and take a different path than most retired Chinese athletes.
