Could someone give me the 411 on Puerto Rico's team? Their stars, upcoming players, players to look out for, etc. Valentin is undersized... but her placement is really good (she played with Lanier last year in Italy, with Enright) Abercrombie will be their offensive outlet. She had a great year in Germany and got picked up by a Turkish team ($$$) to get them promoted to the first team. Enright and Santana will be their outside hitters... both can be a bit unstable passing. I'm not familiar with the middles or libero. With Canada's news (No Maglio or Gray), I think Puerto Rico is NORCECA #3 coming in. (in terms of talent) until the van ryk train hits us all
Has Pilar not developed enough? Where did she play last season? I thought towards the end of her college career that she would be a great prospect for them.

well, I can’t say I like what i just read (other than Maglio getting a look at opp, that’s interesting). I hope Winzer doesn’t deter Gray or Maglio from playing with the NT in the future This seems to be an extremely curious and risky decision by Maglio, as far as her NT career goes. She just may have taken herself out of a starting MB role and possibly off the NT entirely by this decision.

Gray was “ready” to play and hit front row for the last 6 VNL matches and Winzer chose not to play her. I don’t think Gray was too happy about that. Gray did plan on taking a break after VNL. This was pre-planned from back in January. Maglio will also not be at the tournament. She went back to Turkey. She was available to come back but Winzer didn’t think it was fair that she play if she missed part of the lead up camp. Nilufer (which looks to be a bit of a mess…with no real replacement for SWP) will be playing her at OPP this year (due to Hayley Spelman opting out last minute due to surgery and the team in a bit of a bind since they couldn’t get a last minute replacement) and they wanted her back so they could get her reps at OPP before the start of the season (since she’s never played there). @avid Gorrell retired after the VNL. She didn’t get a look at from the NT(?), got engaged so then decided to retire (unless the NT gives her a look). I think Gorrell could have possibly helped the team. well, I can’t say I like what i just read (other than Maglio getting a look at opp, that’s interesting). I hope Winzer doesn’t deter Gray or Maglio from playing with the NT in the future Maybe they can join #PuntoLaViva???

She just may have taken herself out of a starting MB role and possibly off the NT entirely by this decision. Wow. 8 months away with her pro team learning new skills that might actually benefit Team Canada and you pretty much have her off the NT? If that happens, it will be a politically based decision by Winzer. What is risky is Winzer's decision to sit Gray at the VNL, when apparently Gray was healthy enough to hit front row for more than a handful of the remaining games. Also, risky is the decision to not have Maglio play at the NORCECA because it might be "unfair" if she arrived late. Winzer couldn't bring her along and have her sit on the bench and use her if needed? After the 2018 WC, Maglio didn't play in the fall, and then went back to Hawaii in January to finish her beach eligibility. She then played middle for Black in the summer of 2019 (8 months later), and didn't seem to miss a beat. She's one of the quickest, physical middles for Canada. What players are so far ahead of her that by May next year, she won't even be good enough to make the cut at 4th middle (and would be off the team)? Maglio's pro team needed her to play right-side because the opposite they signed decided to get surgery and her pro team "asked" her to to play there. She could actually be valuable to Team Canada as a back-up OPP, or in general, being more versatile. The impression I get is that Winzer doesn't seem to think these high-level players are needed. The team lost ranking points at the VNL by not winning some matches they probably should have and Gray could have made a huge contribution (but maybe it wasn't fair that she was off the first part of the VNL with an injury?). That decision alone could keep Canada out of WC. I hope Gray decides to come back to the National Team next year. Maglio is planning on being back and playing in the middle. It might take some time to get back at it, but I think it would be unlikely that she will be unseeded in the middle position (if not necessarily a starter - at first). Canada really cannot afford to lose these players if they want any shot at Paris 2024 in my opinion.

Canada needs Maglio more than Maglio needs Canada.
also Winzer definitely isn't helping the already low opinion of her lol

I don't know a lot about past history with Canada, but from my understanding, they had a lot of good players like (Love, Pavan, etc.) that left the team to concentrate on their pro careers because of internal issues with the coaching staff. It's no wonder they haven't been to the Olympics since 1996, I believe. Puerto Rico is a huge threat for Canada (especially with the addition of Abercrombie).

De La Rosa -- possibly. She set the FIVB U18 team that took Silver at the World Championships years back. We'll see how she develops. There's a couple other setter options, I don't think Yokaty Perez is the future, I thought Hennesys Lalane was developing nicely and could potentially take over but I'm not sure there's really any clear future option at that position now. The other 2 (Miller-Green and Martinez CMU) I don't think will have impacts. There's U23 action going on right now. The streams are here on facebook. The level won't be great from the other teams, but it's a good look at some of the younger talent from Dominicana and Puerto Rico. USA does not field U23 teams. www.facebook.com/agssport/videosI saw that looking for NORCECA info. Are the streams any good? I dont have high hopes for the NORCECA matches lol Its probably not worth USA's time or resources. These are just qualifiers to the youth pan am games right? The only thing it really messes up is the NORCECA ranking I agree it's not worth USA's time as they have already qualified for WC. Canada and Puerto Rico on the other hand are both working towards qualifying. Aside from the Continental Championships, for Canada, at least they don't have any matches except for Pan Am Cup (and most of the pro players won't be there). What's the cut-off deadline for qualifying for WC?

(or something like that)

I too was hoping Canada would make a big splash onto the scene leading up to 2024....but it would seem there might be some cracks in the foundation of those hopes. Something is up. I don't like the way things are trending here at all.

I agree about both Mexico and Puerto Rico trending up! Good for the NORCECA but not for Canada! Canada’s play was promising at the VNL, even without Gray, but they may have made even more strides if she played front row (heck she didn’t even get in at the back row much). Dropping in the world rankings after the VNL was disappointing.
It will be interesting to see how they match up against Mexico and Puerto Rico.
I actually think Maglio playing right side is interesting too and could possible give Canada a little more much needed depth if she does well there (of course, it won’t be easy to transition to OPP for the first time in Turkey. I hope she does well.). If not, I am sure she can get back on track in the middle.

Do we know who is on the 18 player training roster for this tournament yet for the USA? we don’t know exactly, but based off social media and stuff we suspect that Micaya White, Jenna Gray, Madeleine Gates, Madison Lilley, Cori Crocker, Roni Jones Perry, and Tiffany Clark are in Anaheim right now. I bet Cuttino is in the conversation there too. Not sure who else is there.
