CMS was down 5-11 again to start set 2, but fought back and took the second set 25-20. Up 2-0 on Berry.

Walked back home on a beautiful fall evening π and had a wonderful dinner with Mrs Coach K π all 4 teams looked good π in person but Wisconsin-Eau Claire and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps seemed a level above their opponents. π Waiting for last match but all 4 semi finalists should be strong π

Of course, the best match of the day is the late night one between Trinity (TX) and Calvin π³ started at 8:40 CT and still going at 10:27 CT π¬ well, CK will see one of these two tomorrow night π

CMS gets to/has to avenge their only loss to get to the finals. Something a little poetic about that.

Is there any evidence that the ranking committees do better than good algorithms? But a certain algorithm would have kept the #73 & #75 teams out of the tournament when they were clearly deserving. /s They may have been deserving, but that doesn't mean teams rated higher were not also deserving....

They lost to Calvin 3-1 (5 points separated them) earlier in the season for their only loss. Chapman and Pomona-Pitzer should have made the play-offs.

The unfortunate reality is that on the west coast there are limited opportunities to play ranked opponents out of conference unless they travel a pretty significant distance -- if you're saying their schedules and records are not true reflections of ability, I get it, but not sure how to better evaluate them...

I agree with you but SCIAC has won the national championship twice in the last 6 years (Cal Lu-2015, CMS-2017) so the members of the committee know that the level of SCIAC play is pretty good even though they dont play much out of Calif.

The SCIAC has it's challenges to be sure, but after CMS went 9-1 out of conference, the rest of the SCIAC was 16-34 out of conference and that is not on the committee. Redlands and Cal Tech went heavy on NAIA teams so as not to hurt the conference (combined for 1-1 vs D3 teams), but Whittier (1-8), Chapman (2-6), and Cal Lu (2-8) buried the league, because not only are Whittier's losses in Chapman's SOS once for each of the two games they played Whittier, it's in their opponents-opponents column for each game you play against CMS, and Cal Lu, and Cal Tech, etc. The SCIAC is good, and they'll get at-large teams again, but they need to do better out of conference to earn the right that extra bid.

The quarters were a good show. MIT and Tufts proved they can play, but at the same time it never felt like they were going to win. CMS is a machine! I could not watch Calvin / Trinity(TX) but will soon. This should NOT have been a quarterfinal match!!!
Eau Claire and CMS tonight. Must watch D3 vball!
