So many teams didn’t play last year. I have a feeling things will change greatly for the first couple of weeks.

I am surprised that Ithaca is not in the Top 25 and only in the Others Receiving Votes.

I am surprised that Ithaca is not in the Top 25 and only in the Others Receiving Votes. Some people may be remembering how 2019 was only a so-so year(11 losses) by their standards. Only a reverse sweep at Wesleyan in the last regular season match barely got them to a pool C bid. They have put together a very good schedule with 9 quality non conference opponents. There are playing a schedule to earn a pool C bid if Clarkson gets in the way again. I just ran the D3 season through my strength of schedule spreadsheet and they have the 4th toughest out of region schedule, overall they drop to 53rd(not terrible) as they get almost zero credit for the Liberty League. It is the 2nd toughest schedule in the old NE/NY regions. Highlights are a tournament at Johns Hopkins with Colorado College and a tri-match at Juniata.

If I'm counting correctly, Ithaca's only opponents to play last year are St. John Fisher, Naz, Randolph Macon and Colorado. Am I missing anyone else who played a countable season? How do we know how good a team is going to be when they and 90% of their schedule didn't play last year? Rosters are going up daily. Matches start this week. Things will sort themselves out soon enough but there is a good reason like 20% of D3 is receiving votes right now. Nobody knows anything yet.

All true, and hopefully not something we will see more of this year. But it is also true that we know who the usual suspects are and that the list changes at a slow pace over time. Of the 64 teams in the 2019 NCAA tournament, almost half, 45%, were playing for the 3rd year in a row. You have to schedule using that history and Ithaca, more so than most others, has done that this year. They are going to have to play well, and if they do, they will be positioned for the NCAA tournament. I did this for the first time in 2019, and the #1 team nationally was Illinois Wesleyan. Who then playing a brutal schedule had a very tough year. So we shall see.

By my count there are three returning 2019 First Team All-Americans. All three (Aston, Bliss, Portale) will play for a Johns Hopkins squad that went 35-0 and lost eight sets in 2019. Seems like a solid case for the top spot in a preseason poll.

Seems like a solid case for the top spot in a preseason poll. The schools that have the capacity for post graduate study are going to have a HUGE advantage through 2024 as the NCAA decision to grant an extra season to all plays out. All 3 above were JRs in 2019 so the most likely scenario was they were in school in 2020 and are now taking the extra season, Portale coming from Susquehanna. A place like Hopkins will be an attractive spot for SRs looking to do this. Babson is bringing back third team AA Allie Puccio and adding a grad transfer Julia Palomba who averaged 4 pts/set in 2019. They are looking like the best team in New England on paper.
