Based on what a little birdie told me, I think Phillips can crack the lineup. Glad to know Pater and Goellner will be back. Those two were ballers. I am not familiar with the remaining girls mentioned... White = Madison White, played at 2s (last year as well). She will be a junior. She is probably the best returning player. Thomas = Mabyn Thomas. She was the 5s defender, with Goellner. She will be a junior. Pater and Goellner will be sophomores. Coakley is a highly touted incoming freshman. Gabby Walker played at 4s and 5s last year as a freshman. She was mostly a blocker (I think) but defended some and can play both roles. Delaney Karl is a blocker and played some last year as a freshman. Gessner would be a transfer from Cal - don’t know more.

I was so impressed with USC team. What's the future look like? 5-peat? They lose 6 starters. No more COVID year to snag top transfers as easily. But the coaches will have the team as ready as they can be. Stanford was young this year and will be strong. I don’t know who exactly ucla loses. USC loses 6 starters so it will be a "rebuilding" year for them but they retain key pieces and will have strong freshmen and certainly some transfers coming in. UCLA loses 3, Denaburg Newberry and Whitmarsh but the loss of Denaburg and Newberry will be big shoes to fill. UCLA always had questionable bigs in the past but next year will be even more tested as on paper the next best blocker is Kenzie Brower....? Will likely have a lot of split block teams next year. Stanford loses 3, Hodel Reilly and Harvey, but have tons of young players so on paper they're probably the most talented team. But we all know how they like to choke, and their coaching staff and approach to the game feels abysmal compared to USC and UCLA. TCU should also be good once Alverez and Moreno comes back from the Olympics, and they retain all their key players. These four will be at the top again next year and should be a fun slug fest.

I'd cut the Stanford coach some slack. He can't just take any player. They have to be academically well above average. 80% of USC/UCLA recruits wouldn't make the cut. The only other school I know that has this barrier is Tulane and we all know how well they are doing

Super exciting for her. Does anyone know if she plans to pursue beach professionally after the indoor season? Love her game and could see her making an impact.

USC has had multiple BVB players graduate early. I’m pretty sure the program gets a perfect academic rating every year. In today’s era of HS grade inflation, 4.0 weighted GPAs should be sufficient to get into Stanford via athletics and normally the top players have the discipline to easily hit that mark in HS.

While the Stanford coaching staff still needs to figure out how to approach the national championships, they are much improved now with Billy Allen as the lead assistant. He seems like a great hire.
Even if some of the USC and UCLA players would have the GPA to get into Stanford, they also have to possess an actual interest in academics since not caring about school won't really fly there. It seems like Fuller has figured out recruiting finally, and Stanford should be able to find plenty of talent who also have the academic credentials (just like in indoor volleyball). They will probably always make less use of the transfer portal though, since most undergrad transfers wouldn't qualify and grad programs probably don't care in the slightest about whether applicants are athletes.

Yeah, I am see your point to an extent. While the Cardinal roster has many players with impressive majors such as comp sci and engineering, there are also some “soft” majors like product design and architectural design. Even our Stanford->USC transfers reflect this split. Maddi Kriz has her degrees in bioengineering while Sunny Villapando’s major at Stanford was product design. We’ll see how the past two elite Stanford recruiting classes shake out once they declare their majors….

Stanford has many other nationally dominant programs (WVB, WBB, etc.) who go through the same academic rigor requirements, yet they're able to recruit and compete at the highest level. The academic conversation around these three schools carry no weight in recruiting or the coaching caliber. All schools are sub 10% acceptance rate, are prestigious in their own rights, and are every young girl's go to when picking a school for beach volleyball. Especially after the varsity blues scandal, I'm sure USC and UCLA has tightened their academic and athletic (awards, tourney finishes, etc.) requirements to get into the school as well. None of them offer academic scholarships compared to other schools and each of them have their own advantage in some way: Stanford being an Ivy-caliber name, USC with a consistent flow of grad transfers, and UCLA with cheaper in-state tuition, heavily prevalent for a sport that's still dominated by California beaches.
My problem with Stanford's beach volleyball program as a past fan and alum is the incompetent coaching. There's no dilly dallying around it. Andrew Fuller is not a new coach trying to turn around an up and coming program that he's trying to perceive people. He's one of the longest tenured HC in the sport, finishing his 8th season, going on 9th--only one year less than Brooke Nile's tenure at FSU. Sure, the first few years Stanford used to be an indoor crossover hotbed, but we've seen competent coaches turn around programs in 1-2 years to be national contenders, not the 6 that it took Fuller. Stanford has always been many girls' top pick for years, but the recruiting and player development aspect of the program has been abysmal. We've seen them lose the Nourses and Kraft as recruits who have converted to USC and dominate, and the highly touted recruits who have come to Stanford, where are they now? Ekstrom and Harvey were both AAU Player of the Year among many other top recruits, yet we don't hear a single Stanford beach player in the professional circuit compared to that of USC/UCLA. Not to mention their underwhelming performance in the postseason year after year. I understand the sport is still in its infancy so athletic directors and fans give a lot of head coaches slack, but can you imagine if this was football or basketball and the fans are receiving disappointing seasons after seasons even though the program has vastly more resources and top recruits than other programs? Fuller needs to be a on a watchlist by the Stanford Athletics administration the next season because I can name you several other coaches that can accomplish more in a year than the 8 he already had.

I think you would be surprised how many of the current team have the grades/scores to get in to Stanford. I swear I saw recently SC beach just got the award for the highest team GPA at the school. Do you think Sanford didn’t try to recruit them? If SC and Stanford recruited you no one in their right mind picks Stanford.

Transfer portal opened up last Sunday, goes till June 3rd. I'm hearing Claire VanDeusen is gone. Sterling Fischer had left earlier in the season.

Can USC be as successful without dipping into the transfer portal?

Can USC be as successful without dipping into the transfer portal? I thinknSC needs at least 3 maybe 4 players from the portal who are capable of playing 1-3 pairs

Nourses wind up with an 11-1 record all time at NCAA Championships. Upon watching the replay, I am doubly impressed with Seits/Pater, White/Kriz, and Goellner/Thomas for digging their way out of holes. They could have folded, but they kept fighting. Court records for USC at 2024 Gulf Shores: Kraft/Maple 2-0 White/Kriz 3-0 Nourse/Nourse 3-0 Seits/Pater 3-0 Goellner/Thomas 1-0 In case anyone didn’t get to watch the Finals or didn’t record it, here’s the full replay courtesy of the NCAA. Many highlights. Enjoy! ✌️ Also, Full Broadcast of semi-final against CalPoly.
