Add 2023s Grace Hong from SoCal and Kaylee Young from Southlake, TX. That will make five players now from Southlake that will have played beach for USC. Wouldn’t surprise me in the least if half those 2021’s never make the roster. Thanks! Will update.

No they won't, McCoy is going to continue to pursue her acting career which is why she is at USC, Davis' dad works for the university in some capacity (lawyer?) and the other 4 are all 5'9 and under. The 2022's seem much more interesting.

Bennett and Gallien would make fine defenders. They're comparable to 2021 defenders Moore/Bonnani at UCLA. They both are quick and have a high volleyball IQ. Nevertheless, UCLA won the 2021 class by a long shot with additionally, the taller Myszkowski, Hashman, and Smith.
I would have liked to seen more of Delaney Karl this Summer to access but I believe she was injured. Showalter, a blocker, just continues to improve, she played in the AVP qualifier a few days ago.
In no particular order I would say the top 2022's in the country are
Maggie Boyd Gabbie Walker Alexis Durish Mabyn Thomas Jenna Colligan
I tend to be skeptical of these players that don't travel to California to play in the most competitive tournaments but win all the East Coast/Gulf Coast big events.

2023 Madison Goellner listed as 6'2 blocker. Poetry, TX 2023 Zoey Mitchell, 5'11, Wentzville, MO.
In regards to blockers, it seems to me USC is going for tall but not necessarily getting speed, volleyball IQ, or experience in the hopes they develop down the line.

The lineups will practically be the same. Sub out Hallgren and Dennis, sub in Schafer and Villapando, leaving a whole bunch of folks battling for exhibition playing time.
2023, however, will see quite a shakeup with six starters departing.

With regards to tall blockers, there are so few 6’2”+ who have speed and volleyball IQ. USC has gotten some good/great 6’0” April Ross types like Graudina, Hallgren, Bustamante, Dennis, and Kraft. Claes at 6’2” might be the only great tall blocker as a freshman USC recruit. Cannon, Bukovec, Poletto, Nightingale, Scoles, and now Schafer were all transfers. Since you have to get commits by start of junior year of HS, it’s really tough to project which tall blockers will blosssom. Kloth didn’t until she was over 21. With regards to Paige Hammons, why would she risk her pro indoor career to dabble in Beach for one semester? Look at Plummer’s decision as reference. With regards to plugging in Schafer & Villapando: If Graudina/Kraft remain top pair, then there’d be too many defenders left for the three undecided Pairs - Villapando, Slater, Harward and Maple.

Well if you pair Kraft up with Graudina aren't they in need of one more blocker? You have the twins, then Scoles and Schafer. I'd be inclined to use Kraft as a blocker.
Also, I'm all for Villapando playing if she's better than Bakos or Bennett, but I hope that's fairly evaluated at practice rather than assuming she's the best choice. Villapando doesn't play outside of the college season and if I were a blocker I'd be hard pressed to pass on these younger defenders who were the best in their class and play much more than she does.

Graudina and Kraft are a stellar duo. It would be shame to not let them play up to their potential as a team. Plus their AVP potential won't be any less than Nuss/Kloth.

I think this would mean the 6'1 Cummings would finally come off the bench to start as blocker. Or, you could go small and run a team with two natural defenders.

I like Graudina and Kraft together just because I'm not convinced Kraft doesn't have more international potential as a defender than as a blocker so it's nice to see her get reps on defense (even though she could certainly be one of the best blockers in the country at the college level).

Ultimately, Dain’s responsibility this year is getting five pairs that will beat their counterparts at UCLA. Don’t think any other team comes close.
Moving UCLA’s returners up to fill vacancies, I posit this as their lineup:
1. Denaburg - Newberry 2. Monkhouse - Sparks 3. A VanWinkle - Powers 4. T Van Winkle - Whitmarsh 5. Smith/Myszkowski - Walters/Brennan
How does that match-up with USC’s possible lineups:
Based on last year’s pairings: 1. Graudina - Kraft 2. Scoles -Slater 3. Nourse - Nourse 4. Schafer - Villapando 5. Harward - Maple
Based on personal pairings:: 1. Graudina - Slater 2. Scoles - Harward 3. Kraft - Maple 4. Nourse - Nourse 5. Schafer - Villapando
