I’m really not sure if Pool B is going to be that strong. Brazil is Brazil but I would maybe group them in a tier with Italy at the moment. Cuba… between potential injuries and also almost losing to a bunch of NCAA kids. Their form is in question. Plus I don’t know if their full team is playing in challenger cup, aka less reps to get into form. Japan will need Ishikawa. I have a feeling he will play even if he’s not at 100%, but we’ll see if a return is even possible in this time frame. Brazil is Brazil. They may not have started well but they ended the tournament far from what they've shown in Brasilia. I highly doubt Japan or Cuba will beat them. I'm basing on the Brazil that we saw against the USA. My comment was about the strength of the pool, not the strength of Brazil.

Maybe Gardini declined the invitation? His gf from Utah is visiting and they've been exploring Italy by the looks of it. Certainly not a good look if he did, but still wishes to move up within Italy's OH rankings. Very unlikely, Gardini's chances in Italian senior NT vanished by staying in the NCAA for as long as he did. There are already a bunch of younger guys in the pipeline that show way more promise. There's a chance that Gardini will be a starter for Padova... so I wouldn't rule him out completely yet. But I do agree that there's some high level young talent in Italy's pipeline. Padova currently has 5 foreigners on the roster according to VolleyBox. 3 of them are at OH. I believe Ran Takahashi won't be joining until after his University semester like last year but I haven't seen 100% confirmation on that. So, there will be competition for that spot. Unfortunately due to the roster composition as of now, Gardini being Italian doesn't really offer a big benefit for the team so he will really have to earn it.

Does anyone know why Jaeschke didt make the roster for 2018 World Championships?will he attend the world championships this year? Its kinda weird. He had a fantastic season in Italy with Milano, but why he cant show his ability with National team. He was injured. No word on this year yet.

I remember watching that match and winced when he knee bent back and forth when he landed. It was awful.

Ok. So now that I have watched some of the challenger cup teams I think that pools B and E could be super spicy. Brazil and Italy have not looked so great this season. Türkiye and Cuba could very well get hot and possible (gasp) win their pools.
Pool play is going to be CRITICAL in this tournament. Pool A is a JOKE. This draw reeks of FIVB politics if you ask me.

To be fair, when the draw was made, Serbia was ranked 9th, 3rd overall in pot #2 Tunisia was ranked 14th, 2nd overall in pot #3 Puerto Rico was ranked 24th, 5th overall in pot #4 I think the drawing of pool composition was fair. It just so happened that Russia is suspended and Serbia is struggling now. Currently the world ranking is: #11 Serbia #16 Tunisia #23 Ukraine #25 Puerto Rico Also, agree with Pool B. I don't think Cuba can beat Brazil, but they definitely have the tools to beat Japan. Currently, Japan is #9 Cuba is #12

Hmm Cuba is ranked above the Netherlands? I mean, I think the ranking system is a little whack given that a challenger team is ranked above a VNL final 8 team.
Don’t get me wrong, Cuba has potential but the rankings definitely deserve scrutiny

But if you saw the Cuba games, they have competitive plays. We'll never know until their matches against the teams in the VNL, but in my opinion, they are legitimate contender against Japan. And I won't be surprised if they beat Japan. Remember, Simon is not with them here. Turkey too has a chance because of the decline of the competitiveness of the Canadian mens volleyball team.

We will see about Cuba. The potential is there and they have some really talented players.
But they also barely beat a USA C/D team with Simon and Yant playing if memory serves correctly. That might’ve just been a terrible showing, but still. Turkiye was missing some of their key players as well, so not sure the quality of VB was really that comparable to VNL. That being said, I do think Cuba is better than some of the VNL teams

Everyone spikes very hard and when passing is not great, they can still get points. However, the transition/defense/some other small details are rough. But overall a very good team!
