As the continental qualifiers wind down, the world rankings will be set heading into 2022.
There will no doubt be an official tournament thread as next summer arrives but for now, I just wanted to discuss how teams are looking and any general thoughts pertaining to the 2022 WCH.
USA is looking like it will end up 8th or 9th on the rankings table. This is due to Italy, Slovenia and Serbia performing well at EuroVolley 2021.
Teams already qualified:
Russia (Hosts) Poland (Defending Champions)
Continental Championships:
CSV: Brazil Argentina
CAVB: Tunisia Cameroon
NORCECA: Puerto Rico Canada
CEV: TBD
AVC: TBD
Then, the next 12 highest ranked teams that are not already qualified make the cut.
CEV and AVC are wrapping up here shortly and we will have a complete picture.
USA is likely NOT going to be a seeded team for this tournament which is potentially troubling. It is looking like they will be in the the first pot drawn but that still means they could land in a tough pool. This could happen even if they were seeded. It just has not been a great season on the whole for the men's program.
Let's discuss!

The poll will be active most of the year. That way, folks can change their answers as things develop. With several prominent players retiring across multiple teams, we don't yet know what the full picture will look like for the next international season. Still, it's fun to speculate.
I'm excited for teams like Turkey and Ukraine who haven't qualified for a World Championships since 1998.
Mexico and Germany should make their returns after failing to qualify in 2018.

Thank you for this thread!!
A little update on the AVC:
Ishikawa missed the first two matches but came back. Japan had some nice contributions from Takahashi, Otsuka, and Kento Miyaura (22 year old opposite). Didn't really follow some of the other Asian teams but one match that was noteworthy was Australia and China which went to 5, Australia being the winner. China has an OH that is pretty short but has insane hops. Another thing to note is that Korea lost to Chinese Taipei.
Interestingly, Japan's pool (w/ Australia, China, Qatar) in the classification round is tougher than Iran's pool (w/ Chinese Taipei, Korea, and Pakistan) IMO. Australia and China should be able to challenge Japan.

Another AVC update:
Qatar sweeps Australia!! Also, China takes down Japan in 4. Chinaโs got some quality players + height. Will be interesting to see who makes the top 4 out of this group as China-Qatar and Japan-Australia are the remaining matches.

I hope China can get the continental ticket. Japan and Iran would qualify anyways based on world ranking.

I think how USA does depends on who our coach is.

Chinese Taipei because the men haven't beaten Iran in a long time and this is their only chance to qualify for WCh

With the Taylor Sander news, I wonder who fills in at OH for both VNL and WCh. Russell, DeFalco, Jaeschke, and B. Sander are the more obvious candidates. I wouldn't be surprised if Speraw kept GM around for at least another year. I'd like to see a new face or two in for at least VNL but I'm not sure who. Losing Sander's passing will hurt.

Upon first glance, Pool F looks the most interesting to me. Also, Pool E could be good too

Other than Cameroon, the three top spots in pool D look up for grabs. Pool A easily has the weakest bottom two. As a Canadian, Pool E kinda worries me because China and Turkey have been more so on the rise. Pool F can be really good, depending on if any of the top players from Argentina and Iran decide to retire before then, which I canโt see happening only a year away. Netherlands also has Aziz, and he himself can push teams.
