With the Taylor Sander news, I wonder who fills in at OH for both VNL and WCh. Russell, DeFalco, Jaeschke, and B. Sander are the more obvious candidates. I wouldn't be surprised if Speraw kept GM around for at least another year. I'd like to see a new face or two in for at least VNL but I'm not sure who. Losing Sander's passing will hurt. Is Speraw confirmed for coach?

Probably? I can’t imagine they’d make a big change with a shortened quad but who knows All eyes on Karch then for the women’s squad! I’m actually interested to see the strategy for 2022. At first glance, you could make the argument that the more conservative approach of just having the vets make the rosters is reasonable. But I’m really hoping for some new faces get extended opportunities especially for VNL. Don’t know who tho tbh. I’m not THAT optimistic about WCh ngl, like I’m sure they’ll be competitive but idk about reaching that upper echelon

I'm bored so I wanted to post here for some discussion. Most of the VNL teams will also be playing in the WCh. Will be interesting to see the VNL strategy since it's close to the WCh.
Some things I'm watching for in VNL/WCh:
1. Russia. Pankov is the most physical setter in the world. Also, look out for Fedorov. Even though he is young, with the right opportunities and development, he could be the next big thing at libero for Russia. He could potentially take Russia to the next level (scary!). I want Poletaev to shine too, but he seems to get injured a lot.
2. Italy. We know how good they are -- can they consistently play at an elite level for a top spot in VNL/WCh? Similarly, I'm keeping an eye out for Iran's younger players -- great physicality across the net but some high expectations to meet.
3. Can China gain ground on the world stage? They beat Japan in the AVC, but their ball control, discipline, and volleyball IQ still needs a lot of work. IMO, they have the physicality/height and arms to potentially compete.
4. Obligatory concerns about USA. I expect the same old veterans getting roster spots. Who gets invited to fill out some rosters/which of the younger players step up? Your guess is as good as mine. Just please serve in lol.
5. Turkey/Cuba as potential dark horses in the WCh? We'll see... But they've got some bombers!

1- Russia 2- France 3- Argentina
Russia has to have a self-confident Kobzar, sometimes when he's not in the right mindset he can totally loose everything (he's not really helped by the 2nd setter in Zenit SPB, Kolo, back from BV), other than this setter issue the team will have everyone on board as Poletaev has fully recovered from his injuries. If Mikhaïllov can stop being the arrogant idiot he can be sometimes also, they'll win it. The russian superleague is... phenomenal nowadays, everyone talks about the Super Lega but when you look at how the Zenit SPB easily leading its CEV Champion's League pool and how they struggle at the 4th rank of the russian superleague with Kazan, Lokomotiv Novosibirsk and Dynamo Moscow at the top 3, you can see how the superleague is being stronger. Kazan crushes literaly every team on its road, CEV Cup included, the only downside is the Lokomotiv not doing so great in the Champion's League.
France will be at the rendez-vous: the last euro tournament was not in their mind at all: too many solicitations from the medias, Grebennikov spending too much time in planes between Rennes and Saint Petersburg, same with NGapeth and Brizard switching from the russian league to the super lega, Tillie's son back to french ligue A in Tours, Bernadinho had not enough time to know the guys, the staff, the french federation... won't be the same at the next tournament.
Argentina, yep it's hazardous but those guys are ballsy, and they were awesome at the Olympics in Tokyo.
Brazil... I don't count on them, too much predictable game now. And Poland in Russia, maaaan, what a nightmare it will be for them with the actual geopolitical context. And they are too much dependent on Kurek who can totally loose it in a tight game.

Poland has gone beast mode at the last few World Champs...I don't see that being any different here.
I'm concerned for the USA without Sander. Having Russell back will help for sure but still. I don't think he's lighting it up in Italy either so I don't think it's realistic to expect him to be where he was in 2019.

My expectations aren't too high on Brazil... decent floor bc they have some solid athletes, but with older players not sure where the ceiling is at. Same thing for USA... I assume they'll both be hungry after the Olympic results though.
Mozic has been putting up some beast numbers, I expect he will get some good opportunities. Mandiraci/Lagumdzija are some young guns to look out for too on Turkey.

I dont know if there's been any discussion... but FIVB's nonsense continues. Host teams will get 1 or 2 position in the knockouts (if qualified)

I already don’t like how there’s only one round of pool play (+ only 3 matches at that) and then straight to the elimination rounds. If anything, this gives the hosts much more leeway than the other teams to play iffy in the beginning and get their acts together.

Im curious why FIVB charges so much to host. They wanted 5m from Italy, which is why they pulled out.
It's only going to benefit those nations with lots of money.
Can you imagine the outrage if China got the top seed at the next WCH?

From a player stand point.....travelling and playing VNL and training all summer long from May on ......getting to playoffs is the sooner the better for WORLDS I can tell you that all these guys club teams are wanting these guys to fly direct from this to begin training for the season. Hence....Bruhno's and top pros concerns
