What I do not like is that while most European sports put a huge emphasis on competitive equity, the FIVB has decided not to (while dragging out the international season). The VNL should have had a format similar to this. 4 pools of 4 or two groups of 8. Pool play taken care of in two weekends (playing each team twice in the case of four-team pools). There should never ever be a situation where teams get to dodge other teams in their group before playoffs. In this case, there was one group and some teams got much easier schedules. The World Championships were always cool because winning them was a grind. It achieved what the Olympics doesn't try to: having the best teams compete to find out the best team in the world. I agree that I hated the format where a team could advance to the next group but already be eliminated. Again, that is a schedule feature designed by freaking idiots. Now while I am ok with this tournament being shorter, I would rather have more emphasis on group play and a fewer playoff matches. Round-robin is usually where we find who is the best team. I also have a huge problem with some 3rd place teams qualifying and others don't. This is the biggest tournament in the world, and should be treated like the most important. Every team should have the same chance to show up and win. I am even ok if there were crossover matches between the 3rd place teams to see who goes to the playoffs. There is no way Ukraine should get a 1 seed. The hosts should never get a 1 seed. The effort should be made to seed teams and schedule matches so that we fairly find out who is the best team. The fact they went with away from the serpentine ranking of the pools this year was stupid. How on Earth is the team ranked 23rd in the world given the 1 seed? When there are 6 pools, how does the number 1 ranked team in the world have the 5th-ranked team in their pool. I know the USA was ranked 7th when the pools were made (and Poland was 2, but there is no way with 6 pools that the 2nd and 7th ranked teams should be in the same pool. The FIVB is choosing to turn this tournament into a spectacle instead of determining the best player in the world. I think this is more of a logistic decision. They can't change the format of the tournament. It would be too much work. Redrawing the pool will receive protest from countries since some do like the pool they are drawn to. They do this in tennis too. I think they call it LL or Lucky Loser. For example if Rafael Nadal was already drawn in Wimbledon. But a day before the tournament he backs out because of injury, a lucky loser that is outside of the seeded 128 players will now be "seeded" as if he's rafael nadal. In a perfect world, they should redraw, but the world is not perfect.

Alan was designed to replace Wallace.

Russia should have been like the 5 seed, and I would have been able to live with that more so if you just plug in Ukraine.

World Championship format There will be 24 teams competing for gold at the 2022 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship, initially split into six pools of four nations. Each team will play three games against their pool rivals, with final table standings decided by total number of victories, then most points per match in the event of ties. The six pools are as follows: Pool A: Ukraine, Serbia, Tunisia, Puerto Rico. Pool B: Brazil, Japan, Cuba, Qatar. Pool C: Poland, United States, Mexico, Bulgaria. Pool D: France, Slovenia, Germany, Cameroon. Pool E: Italy, Canada, Turkey, China. Pool F: Argentina, Iran, Netherlands, Egypt. The top two teams from each pool qualifies automatically for the knockout phase, joined by the four best third-placed teams. The format of the tree for the knockout phase begins with the Round of 16, followed by the Quarterfinals and Semifinals. Ahead of the Final when gold and silver medals will be decided, there is a third-place match to decide the bronze medal. www.fivb.com/en/volleyball/rankings/seniorworldrankingmenWeakest pools in order imo Pool A Pool E Pool D Pool B Pool C Pool F...just because all 3 top teams are so close. I expect the following to finish 1/2 Pool A Serbia & Tunisia Pool B Brazil & Japan Pool C USA and Poland Pool D France and Germany Pool E Italy and China Pool F Argentina and Iran Some pretty good 3rd place team won't advance.

Ugh, Serbia's injury woes just continuing... Looks like Luburic will not be able to play due to the heel surgery he had earlier in the summer. Huge loss for Serbia.... that’s a huge loss

I’m really not sure if Pool B is going to be that strong.
Brazil is Brazil but I would maybe group them in a tier with Italy at the moment. Cuba… between potential injuries and also almost losing to a bunch of NCAA kids. Their form is in question. Plus I don’t know if their full team is playing in challenger cup, aka less reps to get into form.
Japan will need Ishikawa. I have a feeling he will play even if he’s not at 100%, but we’ll see if a return is even possible in this time frame.

They may not have started well but they ended the tournament far from what they've shown in Brasilia. I highly doubt Japan or Cuba will beat them. I'm basing on the Brazil that we saw against the USA.

Very unlikely, Gardini's chances in Italian senior NT vanished by staying in the NCAA for as long as he did. There are already a bunch of younger guys in the pipeline that show way more promise.
