I thought Cal was supposed to be better this season? What's up? Not sure right now but Grote has been out all season so far. Mirkovic had an ankle injury (guess but she either sat out games on the sidelines or was played sparingly and her movements looked limited) early in the season. She's playing now but until the Stanford match looked somewhat limited in her movements (to me).

Made it to the game!!! No sign of Pantovic, but everyone else dressed, although Grote, Mertens, and Milli only participated in some of the warm-ups.
Set 1 starter: Mirkovic and Smoot at OH, Hamm and Bergmann at MB, Meader at S, Schmidt at Opp, and DeSa at L, with Lilomaeva and Jensen coming in for the 6-2

Cal loses 1st 2 sets 25-21. Nobody really able to get going in terms of kills. Only 8 kills per set for California, and lots of errors. Bergmark the only bright spot with 4 kills on 4 attempts. DeSa with a couple of aces near the end of set 2 followed by a block by Smoot, but too little too late. Passing a real problem so hitters going up against double blocks most of the time.
On the USC side, Scully playing opposite Botkin, with Denny and Airial at MB, Lazaro setting a 5-1, and Weske at Opp, replaced by a DS in the back row. Denny's got a wicked hard float serve. USC passing better so able to feed their multitude of hitter front and back row, really stressing the Cal block. Cal's MB often either fooled by Lazaro or being instructed to follow the slide/RS hitters, leaving the LS hitters with 1 on 1 situations.

Is USC really gonna lose a bunch of non-conference matches to take them out of post-season contention in the wrong lineup, and then switch to an optimal lineup for conference play to play spoiler? SMDH

does USC still have a shot at making the tournament though? They'd need to finish 10-8 just to get to .500. And I don't know if that would be enough. They might need 11-7.

does USC still have a shot at making the tournament though? Absolutely a shot. They must go 11-9 in the PAC to be eligible. That may or may not be good enough - it depends on how the RPI settles and how many of those 11 wins are against T50/T25 PAC teams.
