Iowa vs. #4 Wisconsin Wednesday, October 6, 2021 - 6:00 PM Central UW Field House - Madison, Wisconsin It’ll be a belated reunion in Madison on Wednesday, as the Badgers (11-1, 3-1 Big Ten) and Hawkeyes (2-12, 0-4 Big Ten) meet for the first time in nearly two years - last season’s series was canceled due to COVID. The Badgers come off of successful border battles, having defeated Minnesota and Illinois this past week. They Wisconsin roster features the reigning Big Ten Player (and Freshman) of the Week, Julia Orzoł, Setter of the Week, Sydney Hilley, and Defender of the Week, Lauren Barnes. Iowa was given the business by the state of Michigan, with losses to the Wolverines and the Spartans. Their roster is still in flux. The seriesWisconsin leads 57-21-1. The teams last met in 2019, when Wisconsin swept. Did you know...?The Hawkeyes’ mascot is named Herky. The name is allegedly a diminutive of Hercules. Prior to Herky, the Iowa mascot was a real live black bear named Burch, who was captured by the football coach in northern Wisconsin. Burch once cornered the football team on a bus. After the bear’s untimely demise during a midwinter escape, a professor named Dick Spencer III (yes, really) pitched the idea for the bird mascot, and thus Herky was born. Unlike Bucky Badger, who regularly visits the UW Children’s Hospital, Herky delegates his sick-kid-visiting duties to his “cousin,” a cheerier looking blue bird named Perky. Herky was allegedly deemed too scary for the job.

Iowa lineups - based on a fairly cursory look at the stats and then a bit of video from this past weekend - so I could have some of this wrong - to say their lineup is unsettled would be an understatement.
They started the year playing a 5-1 with Ortega setting. Around the time the B1G schedule started, they went away from 5-1.
Against Michigan State on Friday, they ran a 5-2 with freshman Jenna Splitt alternating with Ortega at setter, Buzzario playing a six-rotation opposite, and WanderWeide also playing six-rotation. (Adding, with Splitt playing across the front, Ortega across the back.)
Against Michigan on Saturday, they played a 6-2; Splitt and Ortega setting, Ortega subbing with OH Hansen, Splitt subbing with freshman Toyosi Onabanjo who is listed as a middle, but played as an OH; Buzzario then not a true OPP, and subbing out with DS Hinkle; VanderWeige still a six-rotation OH.
So what will we see on Wednesday? Ummm....

Another fun fact: Nebraska corn is superior to Iowa corn. Actual semi-serious question: what would make one state's corn better than another's? Better sugar content? Isn't almost all corn "field corn", used to feed animals or get brewed into ethanol? When you say better, are you just talking about "sweet corn" eaten by humans? Is there a corn equivalent of a "Viladlia onion" in the sweet corn segment of the world, etc?

You know how California dairy farmers talk about how great their cheese is, but Wisconsin farmers know theirs is better? It's like that.

You know how California dairy farmers talk about how great their cheese is, but Wisconsin farmers know theirs is better? It's like that. I lived in CA for many years. There's GREAT cheese in CA, and NY, and Oregon, etc etc. But to carry that forward, there are cheese shows and conventions, etc where they have contests and judging etc., where this or that cheese from wherever in the world "wins", and Wisconsin wins a good share of those awards. Is there a such a thing for corn? Does Minnesota corn ever win? Wisconsin corn? (for example : www.theshelbyreport.com/2020/03/26/world-championship-cheese-contest-winners-top-20/ )

So, I just want the Wisconsin coaches to start the starters and avoid experimenting on the assumption that this game is a walk-over. That is when they get in trouble….
