The school was chartered in 1855 as the Agricultural College of the State of Michigan, one of the country's original land grant universities. Predictably, they were known as the Aggies. Over the next 70 years the school's academic footprint expanded beyond agriculture, and in 1925 it was renamed the Michigan State College of Agriculture and Applied Science. To complete the rebranding, they adopted the Spartans as their mascot.

Unless something weird happens, or the curse of set three kicks in full force, I think the Badgers sweep.

Anyone have any insight into Smrek? I think she's key for a NC run. Hoping she makes an appearance.

Anyone have any insight into Smrek? I think she's key for a NC run. Hoping she makes an appearance. Per Dennis Punzel's weekend preview, published this morning: First, freshman Anna Smrek stepped into her spot, but she was sidelined by an injury after three matches and has yet to return to the court, although she has been practicing. Sophomore Devyn Robinson then shifted from the right side to the middle, where she played in high school and club. In turn, sophomore Jade Demps and freshman Lauren Jardine have alternated on the right side after shifting over from the left. It’s possible that Smrek may re-emerge on the right side at some point. What specific lineup are you thinking would be optimal for a NC run?

Whomever is middle needs to close the block. We can't win unless RS sets block well, slows the ball, and middle can close. However that works, I"m good. I think it's likely Devyn on RS.

Prediction: MSU wins the first set, switches to a 6-2, then loses the next three.

From the very little we have seen of Smrek, for blocking purposes (specifically closing) I would rather see Robinson in the middle. She seems to have the best footwork of the three and is much faster.

I do not think Robinson is blocking well as a middle at the pins and I do believe she'll be able to hit OOS better than Smrek from the right.

The thought occurred to me last weekend while watching the Illinois match that maybe Smrek is 'recovered', but right now Sheffield just prefers Robinson in the middle and Demps/Jardine on the right. Nothing in particular triggered the thought, other than maybe because watching Smrek in warmups and on the sidelines, she looks OK. Time will tell.
