I wish Williams got recognition for player of the match too, she played really well tonight. Didn’t she last night? Honestly think her and Amber performed better than each other on the nights they didn’t receive player of the match

I like Akana in that position with Gong playing back row for her. But yeah if Akana struggles then Leo. Leo is good but her spikes don't have the pace that Akana's does. Leo was on par hitting in the 100's which has been her season average.... The hitting percentage might have been due to the low sets oh yes this too. if lang and leo can get their connection going then the potential is so strong.

I think Akana would have gotten her stuff together given time....

Yes! These 80s float serves are killing me. YUP! This has got to be the weakest serving Hawaii team in the last couple of decades. We got spoiled with all the good jump servers we've had in the past! Except for BVS, the two best servers are freshmen Leoniak and Mia Johnson. It’s too bad Mia does not get much PT now that Riley has established herself and nobody is getting Brooke out of the lineup. Mia is the only one on the team with a spin serve. Leoniak has that hybrid serve. I’m guessing Robyn would much rather the other team earn their points than to be given free points by serve errors so she is OK with all the lollipop serves.

Lang is coming along very nicely. Robyn must be very happy with her progress. The only thing I wish she would do a little more is the set the back row (BVS, RW, Leo) a little more....

Probably wanted Akana to rest, but Leo showed some more consistent play and was kept in.

I think Akana would have gotten her stuff together given time.... I feel like Robyns leash with Akana gets shorter when she’s error prone. We know even with poor starts, BVS and Wagoner are still going to give reliable Passing and Defense. Especially now that Riley is on an upswing offensively it’s unlikely to see MJ or Tiff much the rest of the season. Akana doesn’t give either really and maybe Leo just had good/better blocking practices, she posted some solid blocks today even if they didn’t go down as points. I’m a fan of Gong and her passing for Akana and we just use the slide more but if the D set becomes necessary because Leo scores with it, awesome. I think it’s worth exploring both because just about everywhere else in the line up is looking solid and Lang isn’t nearly as much of a blocking liability we thought she would be, so I really like the idea of her having a lot of options and fine tuning all of them in game situations.

Not the cleanest match from Hawaii. Was afraid this would be a trap game given it's sandwiched right between Cal Poly and UCSB. Bakersfield played some good defense and I do like that they did not come in afraid. Like other Big West teams, they come in with the idea that they can compete and win. Not as much of a fan of the setter's offense, but I do understand the why behind it. If they can make her an offensive threat, it can really mess with the opposing defense. But she had hitters that were doing pretty well at times, so I would have feed those hitters more. Boiseau especially did a very nice job of getting a number of kills and kept the 2nd set close.
For Hawaii, Lang did a nice job of spreading around the offense and getting the middles involved. vballfreak808 put up the weekend stats from this weekend and it shows how balanced they were. Igiede would be my nomination for this week. And while it is frustrating to see Hawaii get behind, it is good to see they have another gear. They just turned it on at some point in each set and started to roll over Bakersfield. It would be nice to see them at a high level the entire match, but it's good to see they are building confidence as a team.
While I agree that serving needs more of a punch, it is forcing bad passes from the opponents. That was one reason that the Bakersfield setter, Elisaia, wasn't as effective at attacking. So, it's certainly not easy serves that are going over the net, but it would be nice to see more bite on the serves to get some free points. The block is doing a decent job of getting touches, and while agree it's an area that can improve, the Big West teams are running pretty quick offenses and I am thinking it could be an issue on the pin blockers more than the middles. This said, Hawaii's backrow is doing a good job of getting the balls up and keeping them in play.

To be honest, Mia’s “spin serve” is a waste of time. It’s just a roll shot from the back row. Either she’s got to learn to open up her shoulders and let it fly (of course improve timing) or she needs to develop a strong jump float.

I think Akana would have gotten her stuff together given time.... I don't think Akana has lost the next start with this outing, but she was the shakiest player in a bleeding start. No one else was stepping up. But, pulling Akana was the easiest substitution with Leo on deck. And a quick way to send a message to the rest. Shape up, or next player up.
Once Leo was in, the tide turned quickly, and really wasn't any good reason to put Akana back in. And every reason to give Leo more court time to work on her game; as long as she was contributing and team chemistry was still ok.

What do you guys think about Leoniak for Akana tonight? Martyna did not hit for a high percentage but she did have 9 digs….something Akana does not bring to the table. Should Robyn continue to play Martyna or would Akana be a better option there? I do think we need some size on the right for blocking. Offensively, Akana might be a tad better but Leoniak provides better blocking, defense and serving. I think that all depends on the team Hawai'i is playing. If they need offensive numbers on the right, go with Akana first and if she struggles, utilize Leo. If they need a bigger block up front first, put in Leo. I do like Akana's right side coverage better when opposing teams are attacking from the right. But again, that's the luxury of this Wahine team, you have players who are interchangeable for the RS and the OH2 position, if someone is having a bad night.
