Good match, Penn State.
That was a bit odd with the challenge at 20-20 in the 3rd set. The big screens at the Pav had a close up look at the touch with a finger quite noticeably getting bent backward yet the R2 kept her head buried in the monitor and couldn't find it.

If that is the case then the CRS system is just very poor. None of the TV shots showed a definitive touch. Plus the R2 is a well respected ref!

Terrible performance by MN. The passing was garbage. Shaf just doesn’t really better the ball. They’re not able to close out sets against good teams. Same issues that has been plaguing them since the first set of the season. I don’t think Landfair would have helped much. Maybe a DS for Wenaas could have helped. I was happy to see Adonna play until she had her bitter moment through the net. I thought she left on good terms. Apparently not.

With all due respect to Landfair, missing her is not why Minnesota lost. Minnesota got plenty of production from both OH's tonight. There is more to the story and there's a lot that Minnesota NEEDS before Landfair. Yup, thy e got some pretty glaring challenges

I was at the Kennedy Center tonight and missed the match. Guess that was a good thing 😬
Someone want to catch me up so I don’t have to doomsday binge scroll?

Minnesota has not peaked, quite the opposite. They are trying to move the ball around and aren't quite there yet. Passing today wasn't as good as it needs to be. IMO, we need a better game plan.
Edited to remove after loss whining.

I didn't find too much negative with tonight's match. Just the little things. I thought Kilkelly had an off night. The serve receive got weaker right at the wrong time as the set 2 lead dwindled away. The hitting got more tentative later in sets, also. Some of that was the fault of the passing but it looked like Samedy rolled a couple of swings where she had a good enough set to give it a blast.
You can say that Landfair wouldn't make a difference but I say a #1 recruit in the nation can't fully be replaced. I do love the play of Miyabe in the back-up role for Landfair.
This team is MUCH better than prior year's teams in serve receive and back row defense. They just didn't show it tonight.

Hate to say it, but the Gophers are just "meh". I have no idea what it'll take to get a rise out of them and actually play to their potential.
You can talk about who did what, and what's needed, but there's no really OBVIOUS weakness. It's just that they rarely seem to be able to fire on all cylinders.
As a lifelong Vikings fans, I guess I'm just used to it.

I've been optimistic for Shaffmaster but I just don't see Minnesota being an elite team with her setting. She cant/doesn't set the middles, is painfully predictable and doesn't put her hitters in good spots to score. It's not like she's working with bad middles either--Myers was All Big Ten before Minnesota and hit almost .400. And with Mel's height you'd hope she'd be a better attacker as a setter but she just isn't.

I like to see more fire from the players during the match but that doesn't seem to be the way they play. I think that makes it tougher during tournament time. You run into the team that is running hot.

I was happy to see Adonna play until she had her bitter moment through the net. Were you happy to see Myers play until her finger wag with her team still down by 6?

MN is the Hellman’s of the B1G They bring out the best…from their opponents!
If you had a chance to watch MSU’s Franklin & Max-Brown on Wed or Orzol almost any night you have to admire the “no prisoners” I am going for it attitude
At some point this weekend I will chart the FBSOs Both teams hit above their weight and blocks were hard to come by but the real difference was how much harder MN had to work for their points
PSU played great in every day facet except blocking Blossom’s sets were converted into kills more readily
I suspected MN might not be able to match their opp’s intensity. Should we be glad we bring out their best?
MN will have to increase their serving pressure vs OSU on Sunday or Podraza will have a field day
We will be 0-2 this weekend without an extra-ordinary effort
2 bright spots Miyabe Shaff’s less routine sets to Wenaas

first ball side out transition kill (bump set spike) tot / totalkill sethit% Set 1 PSU 9 9 18 / 21 .380 Set 1 MN 5 8 13 / 13 .256 Set 2 PSU 5 11 16 / 17 .317 Set 2 MN 11 5 16 / 18 .283 Set 3 PSU 10 8 18 / 22 .364 Set 3 MN 11 4 15 / 15 .333 In point of fact MN was BETTER than PSU in first ball side out at 27:24 But in transition it was a different story. PSU 28:17 This serves to highlight the risk of 'hitting safe' midpoint
Hitting Avg. comparison
player season MN Rollins .234 .333 Hord .414 .444 Parker .272 .341 Holland .405 .550 Storck .126 .111 The 'Hellman's effect'. I believe if you look at the game vs season conference stats most MN opponents have better stats vs their season avg. Maryland would be an obvious exception. Even Indiana was 'going for it' in set 3 a couple of weeks ago.
It is hard to complain when your team hits .289 and your season average is .243
