Oglivie was struggling but was still better than Beaven. I guess Hambly could have tried it but I can see why he didn't since Stanford played better in the third than the second. I think everyone knew going into this season that our bench was thin and we didn't have good back ups in case of injuries. I hope that improves next season. Coaching issue at this point. Team got murdered the first 2 sets. Gotta make a change. Gotta show the other team something they aren’t prepared for. I’d rather see Oglivie swing smartly than weak tips from Berty. Also, why was Francis playing opposite and not OH? Berty would’ve seen less OOS sets if she played opposite. Francis started out playing OH, but was switched to OPP in set 3 because Berty couldn't block anything.

Wasn’t L. Smith injured before college and that kinda carried over into her time at Stanford?

I've been saying this since 2019. The amount of injuries to this team is insane. I've never seen anything like it. Right? And it's every season and all season long. I'm not sure if it's terrible luck, poor conditioning, or what. I wish I knew. But it's pretty remarkable. And with zero depth, it's a real problem.

Wasn’t L. Smith injured before college and that kinda carried over into her time at Stanford? Yes, and Stanford was counting on her being their next great middle blocker. So far she's been a bust due to her injury issues.

Wasn’t L. Smith injured before college and that kinda carried over into her time at Stanford? I believe she had an injury that she decided to have taken care of once she got to Stanford (which of course is the right thing to do) thinking they would have to best care in the world. Little did she know she would still not be healthy two seasons later.

Do we know if the injuries are due to illness or is it conditioning related? I’ve never seen a Stanford team with this many injuries all at once. Might need to revisit our strength and conditioning program if it’s related to that. Stanford had a weights session today… so take that as you will about their coaches/strength & conditioning coaches/training staff.

As one of like the 4 people that chose Arizona in PTW, i’m feeling entertained.

As one of like the 4 people that chose Arizona in PTW, i’m feeling entertained. Well, they won. But, I don't think anyone was impressed.

Arizona sweep (-19, -14, -23) It's a good thing I'm not a betting man. Congrats Wildcats.

Miner is in concussion protocol. Being on the bench is a positive sign that her symptoms aren't too bad; hopefully she recovers quickly. Ditto Kipp and Lougeay and Xu.
Congrats to AZ for a very strong start to the match, and finding a way to maintain that momentum for long enough.
I think there was a stretch in set 2 when Vicini came in, got a kill from left front, got a kill from middle front, then got a kill from right front, and rotated back out -- always cool to earn all 3 side outs in a trip through the front row. It was nice to get her offense going again -- of course, all three kills were basically to the same spot where other teams' liberos have been digging her all year...
Miner and Fidelek on the right, Smith and Smith in the middle, Lougeay at libero, and Kipp and some random on the left could be a pretty decent team. Maybe throw Xu in to set and Miner on the left. That is certainly a lot of quality on injured reserve, and tough to overcome.
Having said that, and having tried to be the voice of optimism for Stanford the last two seasons, that was bad. Poor passing, bad defense, mostly non-existent blocking, careless serving, bad setting and bad hitting. Too much "crummy pass, try to set fast to the pin, weak 2-step approach to a poor set, tip it over, and rely on your defense." Which isn't a great strategy for this specific team. And disappointing that there wasn't more confidence/assertiveness against a team you totally thumped four weeks earlier. Hard to feel like Berty, Beaven and Xu really seized their opportunities.
Hopefully Xu can get healthy quickly too -- she's had a very tough few years health-wise. Going from "why does Stanford have 4 setters" to "Tufuga or bust" in just a couple weeks is rough. And there's not much blame for Tufuga; no one can compete in the Pac with 3rd-string setter reps (and 4th-string setter reps before Greene left). I believe she's now set, played libero, and played left-side hitter in Pac-12 matches this year, after playing some opposite last season, which is a cool accomplishment (apart from the circumstances that caused those things).
The couple times she's set the ball over and NOT gotten a whistle, it still looked like a double on the tv -- for anyone who's watched warm-ups in person, can Francis actually set the ball legally? Stanford really managed only 15 total kills and 15 total digs in the first two sets combined?? Ooof.
Rant over. Tomorrow is (hopefully!) a new day.

Get well soon Kipp, Miner, and Lougeay. Would have loved to see Oglive play 6 rotations at the OH and move Francis to right. What happened to Berty? Thought she was a highly recruited piece coming out of high school...
