I thought Hambly said (a couple of weeks ago) that Annabelle Smith would be available. She has not played yet this season either, right?

I thought Hambly said (a couple of weeks ago) that Annabelle Smith would be available. She has not played yet this season either, right? Per my memory (and confirmed by the stats), A. Smith has not played this season. It looked like she had a broken finger/hand/wrist or something; hopefully she is getting close. But didn't seem to be in uniform yesterday.
L. Smith came in for like 6-7 points at the end of a blowout win (first AZ?); the stats say that's the only set she's played it. It was reported she played a little in the Cardinal/White scrimmage for a set or two, then I think she was out of uniform a while, in uniform and played a touch, then back out of uniform lately (or so it looked). I haven't seen a match in person yet to know when she did, or didn't, warm up, but she seems to be yo-yoing in and out of availability. Apparently recovering from a knee thing? And she also had sunglasses on the bench a couple times, so maybe a possible concussion in there somewhere?
Best wishes to them both on returning to full health!

Last night on TV it looked like she had no support device on her finger(s) and they were moving freely. A few weeks ago she had a smaller device on her hand vs the original one that held her finger in place. I'm thinking she could probably play soon. OTOH, as long as Campbell and Vicini are ok, maybe you save the year of eligibility.

Get well soon Kipp, Miner, and Lougeay. Would have loved to see Oglive play 6 rotations at the OH and move Francis to right. What happened to Berty? Thought she was a highly recruited piece coming out of high school... I'm not sure why Stanford recruited her based upon her physical attributes, unless they were thinking of her as mainly a decent backup. Her vertical jump (or lack thereof) really affects her ability to attack and get the ball to the floor. She needs excellent set location before she'll swing at the ball; otherwise it's a tip. Her blocking, again due to her vertical jump, is inadequate.

Miner is in concussion protocol.
Miner and Fidelek on the right, Smith and Smith in the middle, Lougeay at libero, and Kipp and some random on the left could be a pretty decent team. Maybe throw Xu in to set and Miner on the left. That is certainly a lot of quality on injured reserve, and tough to overcome.
What on earth? lol

Thought she was a highly recruited piece coming out of high school... At the time, she was PrepVolleyball.com's National High School Player of the Year, but only ranked in the 70's in it's Senior Aces. The NHSPOY award goes to the player with the best high school season, but Senior Aces is more indicative of future potential and success. So people who understood the Senior Aces rankings knew Berty wasn't really being recruited as a starter, but more as a serviceable back-up. With regards to last night's match... was it bad? Of course it was. But I imagine practices are centered around the starting team and everyone else. So it's no wonder that there was a lot of confusion on the court. Losing one starter is bad... but three? And who knows when the team found out either. And it's not like the players that were missing were solid role players in the starting line-up - Miner and Kipp are essential to the team's success. So for those calling for the coaches heads, then obviously you have played on teams that have lost three starters within a week and still performed great on the court. There are a lot of nuances to team sports and I am sure the coaches would love to pick your brains on how to overcome such trivial matters. Not to mention, your back-up setter is suffering from an ankle injury... so essentially that's four players out of the starting line-up. The only fault I can really place on the coaching staff is not switching Francis and Berty earlier - I'd make that change in the second set rather than the third. Or I'd try Fidelek on the right (though not sure if she was actually available). Either way, that was the most optimal line-up with all the injuries, unfortunately. Moving Oglivie is an interesting idea, but given that there wasn't anyone else to play DS (assuming Beaven moves to libero) and Oglivie hasn't hit at the college level at all... not sure it would have worked out much better. But I will say that Berty tipping four times IN A ROW is inexcusable as an outside hitter. That is on the coaching staff for player development.

Towards the end of set 3 I think she tipped 3 balls in row and Arizona's right back picked up each one.

I just think that having one year down of college volleyball as an outside hitter, and the level of talent that comes with it, that you would want to improve your own game as a player, given the fact your Freshmen campaign didn't go so well. (Granted they were bombarded with so many hurdles last year in their schedule). I would think she would have developed more as a player with that experience from last year and knowing what she would be going up against this year. As for the match last night, it was bad, but understandable, given the circumstances. With Beaven, it would have been interesting to see her at Lib and trying Oglivie opposite of Baird because of her international experience at that position in the past. Just a thought tho. But yes, the injuries are just unfortunate. It's a good thing this is the middle of their season and not at the end.
