I had a doctor appointment that went long, and then went shopping, and now that I have arrived home I see that the Huskies have won, which makes me pleased.

UW looking good. It's the first match I've seen this season and my first thought is I like Lauren Bays, we may have a true Libero since Candace Lee. This team has improved on defense for sure and with Claire, Sam, Grote, and Sanders delivering on defense and offense is great. I do have to say I am very proud of Lauren Sanders, she is from my little home town of Snohomish, Washington. Go Huskies! You don't think OLYMPIAN Tamari Miyashiro was a "true libero"? I also thought Shayne McPherson was quite good.

Lauren Bays is the real deal for a libero and I frankly don't give a %*$# if you care or not.

UW .278%, 4bl, 11sa, 51d Hoffman 15k .351 Drechsel 11k .200 Grote 6k .429
ASU .177%, 9bl, 0sa, 41d Isonavic 11k .200 Jeter 5l .357 7bl
What is UW's all time low for blocking cause that is very low for them. Also 11 service aces vs. ASU's 0 is impressive

Back from the match and I have to say I was almost shocked at how poorly ASU played. Ok, the Huskies had something to do with that, but ASU was not ready for prime time tonight. Especially the floor defense, which was sluggish and disorganized. The passing was also poor, although UW's serving was excellent. Indeed, it felt like Hoffman and Crenshaw were just toying with the Sun Devils' serve receive at times. Conversely, ASU's serving, with the exception of Isanovic, did little to challenge the Huskies. You would never have guessed that ASU was actually ahead of UW in aces/set in the conference going into this match (the Huskies enjoyed an 11-0 edge in service aces tonight).
Nor would you have guessed that this ASU team beat Utah and UCLA in the last few weeks. Or that ASU is one of only three teams to take undefeated Louisville to five sets this year (the other two are Pitt and Kentucky). Sanja will want to flush this match down the toilet.
Ok, now that I got that out of my system, there was much to like about the Huskies' effort. For one, they didn't really let their foot off the gas and there was never a time where you felt they were not in pretty much complete control. I was particularly interested to see how the defense would do and they did just fine. Bays looked MUCH better than last Sunday against UCLA, both digging and reception. And I have to give a special shout-out to Sam Drechsel, who was her usual efficient and devastating self on offense, but who doesn't get enough praise for her digging when she is in the back row. Sam is never going to win any awards for quickness, but her positioning is excellent and she has to be one of the better digging 6'4" opposites you will see.
Emoni Bush did not dress for the match but was in the arena and looked fine from a distance. Hopefully something she can get over quickly. Calle and Griffin were still in street clothes. And Dani Cole was not in the arena.
In Bush's absence, Endsley played all three sets and I was happy to see her get the reps. EMP needs to develop a better connection with Madi and find better location. Probably the only answer for that is more playing time for Madi. (As an aside, EMP did not have consistently good location with anyone tonight. It seems that EMP plays best when the stakes are highest.) Assuming Bush can get healthy fairly quickly, Cook does have something of a dilemma in figuring out the OH2 spot. Neither Bush nor Endsley have been very productive this year, when you look at the entire body of work, but both have shown flashes of brilliance. We also know that Endsley did consistently well in the tournament last Spring. I think Cook would love to have Bush come on strong but she's just been so up and down.
I'm fairly confident that Arizona will play better defense on Sunday, but I'm not sure they have the arms to really give UW a problem. We shall see.

Also 11 service aces vs. ASU's 0 is impressive I wouldn't place too much emphasis on the blocking stats from this match. A big reason that UW did not have a lot of blocks is that ASU sent a lot of junk over the net because their ball handling and serve receive was so poor. So fewer opportunities to line up blocks. Most of ASU's blocks seemed to come in the second set, when UW's hitters forgot to hit high hands and instead hit a bunch of shots right into the block.

I'm fairly confident that Arizona will play better defense on Sunday, but I'm not sure they have the arms to really give UW a problem. We shall see. I think this is actually backwards. Arizona's defense (floor and net) is an overall weakness, but between Hodge and SMD they have the arms to cause problems if they get hot.

Arizona's defense (floor and net) is an overall weakness, but between Hodge and SMD they have the arms to cause problems if they get hot. You might be right, but that's not how it worked out in the first match between these teams in Tucson. Arizona only hit .160 in that match while holding UW to .203. Hodge hit negative and SMD hit under .200. Arizona made it somewhat close primarily because of their defense. Maybe that match was an anomaly and so it will be interesting to see how things work out Sunday.
