I'm thinking starting lineup will be: Anyone know differently? OH: Roberto Rabelo-SR, Geli Cyr-JR OPP: Marta Levinska-SR S: Shannon Shields-GR MB: Claire Jeter-SR, Maddie McLaughlin-GR or Olivia Johnson-SO L/DS: Mary Shroll-GR, Estella Zatechka-SO geli has more experience at asu, but i don't know if she starts over cromartie. the liberos are up in the air for me, ravnsborg started the season but larson-nummer started more as the season went on. excited to see what shroll and zatechka can do under van niel...i can see any one of the outsides needing a ds to help with passing (which i think will improve now that iman transferred) levinska, jeter, and shields are definite starts, and i hope we don't do that 6-2 foolishness we did at the start of last season. levinska is a very good 6ro player and can provide a spark from anywhere on court. the middles trouble me the most. mclaughlin didn't play at middle last year, and is slotted over to mb because we don't have the depth and wasn't able to transfer in that need? sounds like trouble to me. johnson and perez are complete unknowns at this level, so fingers crossed to this squad! you think rabelo starts over geli? i was thinking cromartie/cyr. rabelo and cyr's offense aren't that far apart imo but rabelo is arguably a worse passer than iman ever was and that's a low bar lol

Geli is a consistent player, and does well in the backrow to my recollection. If anyone doesn't start I'd think it would be Rabelo, or possibly Geli will be backrow for Rabelo or Cromartie. I agree MB is a ?. I suspected McLaughlin would start. I recall her being used a blocking sub last year. Though not sure if the RS-FR or FR can take their spot. I agree libero is a ?. Considering Shroll and Zatechka's experience, I would expect them to start, though Ravensborg did have some libero time last year too, so she is in the mix.

Be hard to believe that both Geli and Cromartie would start, being that they are both undersized. One will likely be all around. That is why I thought maybe Rabelo front row for Geli back row. She can hit back row still if they do that, and it helps tighten up the passing.

I don’t think keeping Cyr on the floor and feeding Marta and Jeter as much as possible though would be a bad thing either if they wanted to have all 3 pins play six. it also might depend on how the littles look. if there’s two that really stand out, i could see rabello playing front row and Cyr only coming in if one of Rabello or Shania are struggling. I’m just not sold on Rabello and Cyr offensively… which leads me back to the point of, Cyr’s passing is way better, so why not just have the better passer so you’re in system more

After attending the Maroon and Gold scrimmage yesterday I have my annual thoughts on the outlook of 2023 Sun Devil Volleyball! First off, games at Mullet Arena! Well wait, first off, 10 home games, sad days. I assume it’s tough for a first year head coach to get home non-conference tournaments scheduled, but it still stinks for the fans. OK, back to Mullet (the Hockey arena where 5 of the games will be played), pretty cool place to take in the game, and it’s nice and brand new. One downside is the floor is so much bigger that if you sit in the stands on the ends, you’re very far away from the court.
Let’s start with the most known quantity, Marta Levinska will be the Right Side Destroyer of Worlds, we know this. We’ll probably have to lean on her even more this year. On to Outside Hitters, Senior Roberto Rabelo, Junior Geli Cyr, and transfer Junior Shania Cromartie will all share reps at OH, but there isn’t a big separation between them. Rabelo took a significant step forward last year, if she can do the same again that would help take this position group from probably the lower third of the Pac-12(4) to maybe the middle third. Jillian Neal is an incoming freshman OH, but didn’t really impress in the scrimmage. I didn’t see a lot of explosiveness yesterday, and lots of hits and even tips directly into the block.
Sun Devils have a lack of depth at Middle this year. Senior Claire Jeter will lead the group and hopefully she gets worked into the offense more this year. I think Maddie McLaughlin might get the next most play time at MB. She has played very sparingly over the last four years, but looks to get a lot more play time this year after switching from OH to Middle. She’s a pretty big athletic presence, and she’s put in the work over the years. It feels like she deserved more play time than she had received. Olivia Johnson is a tall Sophomore that didn’t get much play time last year. She was out injured for the M&G scrimmage this year, and I believe was injured/didn’t dress a large portion of last year. I don’t expect her to see the court much. For me, Freshman Hokulani Perez was the bright spot for new players at the scrimmage. She was very active in blocking and while her swings were of the waffle-y/paintbrush-y type typical of lots of middles, they were effective nonetheless. She reminds me of a player uofa usually gets who I don’t think is great, but gets the job done, and is annoying to play against. Glad she’s on our side!
On to Setters, Shannon Shields should have the position locked down this year. Her excellent chemistry with Marta is hugely important, especially since we’ll need to rely on that connection for a large portion of our offense (no matter where Marta is on the court). Freshman Brynn Covell, was my second bright spot of the newcomers at the scrimmage. She tracks down errant passes well, but needs to keep developing chemistry with her new teammates. She has the size to be a threat on two as well, though she isn’t a lefty like Shields (who I hope continues to get her share of devastating kills on two). I assume someone is designated as an emergency setter, but as of now those are the only two on the roster.
L/DS: Jaden Ravnsborg, I expect will be the starting Libero this year after splitting time last year. Mary Shroll is a grad transfer, who may be the only one to push her for starting reps, but I didn’t even get a read on her in the scrimmage, sooo maybe not. Meadow Cooper is a returning Junior and might have a similar role as last year, as a serving sub and DS here and there. Estella Zatechka is a transfer Sophomore and I thought she looked decent, maybe she can develop into taking over the starting spot in the coming years.
Okay, on to some predictions: I’m cautiously optimistic that our serve receive improves from last year. Though that’s not saying much. Offense probably takes a small step back (losing Iman hurts here, but helps in passing, it will be interesting to see here when we play Washington State) 13-19 7-5 non-conference, 6-14 in the Pac-12(4), it’s kind of hard to argue with the Preseason coaches poll placing us 10th(negative 6th) in the Pac12(4). I did predict these records before looking back at last year and saw that they are the same.
I noticed last year I said the program was on the rise. Welp that didn’t pan out, back to a rebuild. JJ Van Niel seems like a good hire, and has a good resume, but he’ll likely need a couple years to make some headway.

Some thought Cromartie would definitely take aspot, bit I agree that she, Rabelo, and Cyr will be close. The latter two have the benefit of reps with Shields. Be great for Maddie to start in the middle. She is a tall presence and was only used as a blocking sub last year, so should slot in middle well. Sounds like libero is going to be up for grabs. Ravnsborg did have it part-time last year, so would make that she'd have best shot. I just thought Shroll's experience would give her an edge. I guess we will see.

13-0 they had 13 wins all of last season. Granted the schedule hasn't been that tough, it's still a step forward compared to the last few season.

new signees announced on x, formerly known as twitter today for the sun devils: twitter.com/SunDevilVB- bella faria, from springfield, mo - jadyn wilgus, from leander, tx - lauryn johnson, from salem, or all three were recruited and committed under tomasevic. glad to see they're sticking with the program after the coaching/regime change. not sure of what position they were recruited for (sans faria, whose post mentions 'new outside hitter alert'). wilgus and johnson are listed as MB/RS on their hudl profile.
